Main caps

Can you buy main caps from aftermarket sources or is it basically the ones that came with the engine stay with the engine? i wonder cuz i just tossed out a set of main caps earlier and am wondering if that was dumb or what.

If you put main caps on an engine other than the original then you need to line bore the block again. People do this though to convert 2 bolt blocks to 4 bolt. If you have a junk 2 bolt block then I would personally junk the main caps also.

I don't really know about small block caps but I know that big block 4 bolt caps usually fetch about $50.00 on E-bay.

You screwed up. Go fish them out of the can . Replacement main caps run $100 ( china )-$200 (milidon) and lineboring a block is in the $125-$200+ range. Makes for a nice block but spendy plus you'll need a different timing set to compensate for the shorter overal deck height.

Once you dig them out of the can look and see if they are marked anywhere. As 1970 CST Short Wide stated it's important to put them back in the same position they came from. If they are not marked, all is not lost but you should have it linebored or linehoned. Your machinist should be able to check it and determine which you will need. If you are planning to reuse the rods mark the rods and caps also, you dont want to mix them.

The GM crate engine that sell for around $1200 is basicly a stock spec 350 made in Mexico with all new GM parts. It does come with a GM warranty. They usually make about 200HP with a stock 4bbl intake, qjet and duel exhaust. Adding headers and a performer intake bump it to 240-250HP. If you decide to build or have a different engine built I think you would be money ahead just to find a different block unless you're planning on a 500+HP engine, in which case a aftermarket block might make more sense. Upgrading the main caps is fairly pricey and not really required even for a very hot street engine....Stroker
