head bolts

when puting a new set of heads on would you change head bolts or use the old ones. i just bought some ZZ4 heads and am trying to justify the 145 for ARP stainless bolts.

All my performance engine building books say to change them to studs. I have built stock daily drivers without changing bolts and have not had a problem. If it is a performance motor I would go with studs...more accurate and consistent torque readings.

Old bolts are streached out and will not give acurate torque readings.
However, a street motor will never know the difference.

You do need to replace the bolts due to fatigue, cracking and stretch. Studs are nice, but not necessary for most. They do make it easier to swap heads. Scoggin Dickey sells bolt kits at a decent price. ARP makes good bolts, but unless you're doing a high performance build they are expensive.

spring for the arp headblot...more accurate torque and peace of mind in my opinion. plus the arp blolts look cool with aluminum heads

then i can buy the carb spacer i was asking about in another thread. and get my ZZ4 heads looked at by a head shop and have them doo the steam holes too. she gets the 140ish bill i get the 110, but them i still have to buy gaskets, not to mention the heads i already bought. hey i might even let her drive it

You dont have to use the ARPs.....you can just run GM bolts...just make shure they have the correct washers, because thats a "must" for aluminum heads.
Old head bolts are fine in most cases. but a new GM set are around $30 fro cast iron heads. The only bolts you CANNOT reuse are "Torque to yield" , but then again under that shade tree CANNOT turns to SCREW IT I'M GOING TO SELL IT ANYWAY........

the gm bolts new from gm probably arent any cheaper from gm than a set of ARP

you could be right, what I should have said is dont spend the extra $ on Stainless ARPs when the Black Oxide ones will work just as well.

Dean...how do post that big picture in your message? I thought we could only upload like 642 x 642 or something?

My buddy let his wife drive his 502 ci/550 hp El Camino...once! She got on it at about 45 mph and did one huge donut...parked it in the middle of the highway...stopping traffic. He was following and had to get in and finish driving it to the show. She drove his truck...LOL!
