you're better of finding a decent set of headers or manifolds... the ramhorns from what ive heard tend to overheat or cause other problems in this area, most specifically causing major rubbing/burning of spark plug wires in short times.

Thats 100% not true. I only wish my headers gave me the clearence my ramhorns do. Only problem area is the motor mounts needs a slight bit cut off to clear the collector. Absolutley not a problem or somthing that comprimises strength. Now I did have my MSD wires lay directly on the manifold when I first was putting the truck together, and they burned threw quickly. They'll also do that when you lay them on headers My borg-warners that replaced them also layed on them on a drive once [before I got wire holders] but they had no problems at all As to the Q- theres no "jap" ramhorns that I know of, and it wouldn't matter if they were. The ramhorns you linked are both 2" outlet manifolds, a slight increase in performance compared to stock manifolds. Probably not worth the hassle of changing the exhaust to fit them.

Tom has the correct answer, and he speaks from experience not rumor. To add to what he said, those are 2" ram horns. The first set is truck style and the second set are Corvette style.
If your looking for performance gains and don't want to run conventional headers you will need 2.5" ramhorns. They can be bought from GM as part # 3797901 (left) and 3814970 (right).....

The angled ones are perfect. The straight-down dumps need the driver's engine mount trimmed a little. (I did it with a torch as I was putting them on )
Burnt plug wires are not a problem.... you need to get a long set and feed them around the back and underneath. You will need to change or bend the dipstick - it will be in the way. I put dual exhaust on at the same time... I liked the sound and my perceived power. I have no data to verify how much power I got out of it.

Go with the 2.5" Ram Horns. The next best thing to headers with No Headaches. Custom build you plug wires with straight plug boots.

Great information!
How about a comparison of the 2.5" Ramhorns and headers? I don't know much about them. I was thinking of going with headers until a friend of mine who is more mechanically inclined than I am advised that they are prone to exhaust leaks and make changing spark plugs a challenge. He actually welded his to the exhaust because he was tired of leaks. I'd rather leave my truck stock than deal with a bunch of problems. Is there any downside to the Ramhorns? They seem like a good compromise. A pretty much stock setup with more power. Will the part numbers listed above bolt right up to a 350? Thanks! |

Can the one with no bracket be run on both sides? If it points straight down, it should not matter, should it? Does it interfere with the dipstick, maybe? Slonaker Last edited by Slonaker; 04-12-2005 at 09:21 AM. |

I was gonna ask how the heck he managed that underhood picture with the hood closed, then I noticed the lack of inner fenders, lol

It seems every time this subject comes up, someone has a negative comment about Ramhorn manifolds. I think that comes from people having problems with the truck style cracking. The 2.5" Corvette style manifolds are a very good choice for most people. If they are port matched they will flow "almost" as well as many shorty headers. They won't flow as well as long tubes, but you don't have to deal with them blowing gaskets either. Here are a couple of pic showing plug wire routing.... |

The ones with the generator brackets can be modified fairly easy. Although I have never done it, I have been told the bracket can be cut of with a band saw or cut off wheel, and the manifold smoothed out with a sander and course paper.
If you want to spend a little more money you can buy them from Classic Chevy without the generator bracket. They are listed as Part# 24-111 and sell for 399.00 a set- Classic Chevy |

OT for a sec. Ken, that small block in the black rod has got to be the finest lookin hot rod engine around, bar none. That thing is a beaut.
And the chromed rams look right at home on it too.

Can we add another second to OT.
N2 - Is that the Scotty Gray that has a few rods built by Boyd? If so, I believe he had Boyd build that 32, the 'Aluma-Tub', a sixty-four(?) Mustang for his wife as well as a 'few' others. Got any pics of some of his other rods?

Yep that's the infamous Scotty Gray. He sold a bunch of those cars at the last Barret-Jackson auction. My buddy Keith said he just bought a bunch more though.
Here's one you didn't mention. Another Boyd car called Whathehaye.... Last edited by N2TRUX; 04-10-2005 at 11:44 PM. |

I've seen pictures of that rod, but I didn't know that Boyd had built it. I remember seeing a show where a coachbuilder (not Marcel) was crafting a similar 'European-style' rod. I never saw the finish product. Maybe, it's the same one. Regardless ...
Thanks for the pics and the info.

You might try looking here at Direct Auto.com
http://store.yahoo.com/dpstore/repai...-350-5-7l.html This listing is for 350 trucks but they may also have the others too.
