bonehead move
today i was swapping the rear ends in my green truck and my orange truck, because last week the orange truck blew its guts out on the highway. anyway the rear end of the green truck was completely unbolted from the truck and it was just supported by a floor jack under the rear end. so, he truck ended up falling off thejack and striping the bolt in the yoke where the strap is bolted on. luckily we were all watching from afar and no one was hurt.
now i get to locate on of those and try to get the old pinion nut off. anyone know the torque rating for the nut that holds the pinion yoke on? ryan Last edited by ryanroo; 04-16-2005 at 10:32 PM. Reason: stupid error |

Here is what the Haynes manual says for semi-floating axles. Yours might be full floating but they should be the same.
1. Jack up the rear end of the vehicle and remove the driveshaft. 2. Using an inch pound torque wrench, measure the torque required to move the pinion. Then remove the pinion nut and washer to change the seal. 3 Relace the seal and install the nut and washer and tighten the nut to have the same number of threads showing as before. The torque should measure 1 to 5 inch lbs more than the original measurement. You can hold the pinion shaft with a large wrench or adjustable and turn the pinion nut with a socket and breaker bar or I just use my impact wrench. Hope this helps. VetteVet
