New Member Z71 questions

hey guys i am new to this board and got a few questions. I finally talked my aunt out of her Chevy Z71 She bought it when i was in highschool and have loved it since LOL even took it to prom LOL its a 1993 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado Z71. Two tone black top and bottom and Sand beige in the middle, regualr cab short bed. its been parked for 4 years her and her cowboy husband bought matching F250 crew cab 4x4s. sickening LOL anyways the problems it has

1- in 96 i wrecked it and they replaced parts of the 4wd system well in something the transfer case or front axle they didnt put enough grease and ti chewed the gears up. it drives but wont engage 4wd she cant remeber which went out how do i find out transfer case or axle?

2- the heater core and it overheats. i plan to bypass the heater and change the thermastat how hard it is to replace a heater core?

3- TV cable?? she said TV or TB cable . Seesm you gotta manual shift through gears and it wont shift automatically a guy told her the transmission needed rebuilt but my buddy says it is easy to fiox ANYONE??

4- what fluid should be changed ? they start it 2 times a year i wanna change the oil new battery and ya think i need to drain the fuel? i was maeesin with it and when i took the cap off it was pressurized. what else before i start it for the first time?

5.- the saddest part of it all LOL the tires that were on it were traded for something and she put these god aweful tiney tires on. its the Z71 star 16" rims i was told 245 75 16s wer e stock, and i can put up to 295 75 16s and maybe 305 75 16s. now canyone have pics with the differnt sizes look like? ive seen some that look to big but i dont want em to small. i also got the bushwacker extendafender flares on it so it sticks out 4 nches or so advice?

1. its the front axle actuator.
2. not very
3. TV cable (TV stands for Throttle Valve), and if you have to manual shift the trans, its done.
4. what fluid shouldnt be changed? i dont see any reason not to change them all.
5. 245 75 16s were stock. 285 75 16s rub very bad on a stock truck, any bigger you're going to have to lift it.

Last year I sold my '91 K1500 Sliverado 4x4 and picked up my '67. The Heater cores seem to last about 1-2 years in these trucks and they are NOT fun to deal with. My brother-in-law has done 3 in the past 4 years in his '89 1500. I spent a butt-load of $$ for a 6 inch Pro Comp IFS lift, steering stabilizer, Rancho 9000s and 10x31's on steel rims. It looked nice, rode great but was not durable at all. I still had probs with the front axle seals leaking. I hated the front axle actuator. If you are hard stuck and can't move it will not engage. You needed about 10-15 feet of movement before it would lock the hubs up. Best advice I could give is to junk that IFS front and go with a straight axle & lift. The cost should be the same and much easier to deal with in the long run. If you buy a heater core get something with a warranty, not the cheap Shucks/Kragen/Auto-zone/Pep-boys type junk. Just my 2 cents, but have fun with it!

My Z71 came with 265/75-16's, as did every other Z71 I've seen. I have heard of Z71's that came with the 245's, but have never seen any.

You can run 285s on a stock truck. I have a set of Force 4 A/T 33s on an 8" wheel that are really wide, and they rub on the edge of the fender. I just tapped it with a hammer so it can be straightened out, and now it only rubs going in a driveway or a bump turning. I will try and get some pics of them on my truck today. As for a lift, go for the SAS. LIke American said, it is the same price to do it. I've done one already, and slowly doing another, and it is far cheaper and far more reliable in the long run. I have a 1 ton truck and a lift for that with shocks is about $1500. I'm guessing that I will have $1000 in the lift when I'm done. I got lucky, but that includes buying a HP60. Making brackets isn't that hard, about the only thing that might be is finding an axle, depending on what you want to do with the truck. Just a driver/light wheeler, I think a 10 bolt or 44 will fine. If you don't want to change the transfer case, then you will need a Ford 3/4 ton axle, which can be tricky to find, but are out there. If you need one, I know where there is a couple, and probably more. If you don't ming changing the t-case, then I have a Dana 60 for sale from a Dodge. For the most part, they are identical to a GM 60. And I know where there is another Dodge 60, and two newer style HP60 for sale also.
