Rear End Gear Ratio
I know this has been covered before, but can't find any history. I am trying to figure out what gear ratio my "72 C10 has. I was told it is supposedly a 3:73. I tried the jack up both rear tires and rotate the tire then count the rotation of the pinion yolk. I came up with 1.5 turns of the pinion to 1 full tire revolution. Some how this doesn't sound right. What ratio would this be?

turn the tire 2 time to get your number, 3 3/4 turns would be the 3:73 gears.

I bet it is a 3.07 in a 72 if it is a factory V8 truck. And I bet it is actually just over 1.5 turns on the pinion to a full revolution on the tire.

If you don't have posi, keep one of the tires stationary. This will give you the actual ratio. You will most likely have three and a half or three and three quarter turns....3.42 or 3.73.

If you have a "peggleg", & 1 wheel on the ground, i will bet 3.07 as Hotfun has stated. The ratio on the spiders is 2 to 1......

why don`t you get the code off of the tube on passenger side.this will tell you ratio,what it was originally to be put/installed in at factory.or,better yet,take off the cover(no telling how long gear oil has been in there)and count the teeth on ring gear/pinion,divide pinion into ring,wala!or if you look on the side of ring gear while turning,it`ll be stamped into it with teeth count of both.good luck
