Some help please...
Ok, so for the people that don't know, I just joined the truck realm again. I have had a 71 blazer for a while, but I just got a 71 truck...
For pictures...reference.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=157727 Now, the truck is claimed to be a 71 body, and a 72 frame. But, I am thinking that it may be a 3/4 ton chassis. How do I find out? Because in ordering parts, I have to of course take into consideration that my frame might be a 3/4 ton. Any help would be great... Oh, and what were 402s called on the glove box sticker? I know that 68(I think) through 70 were 396s and 71-72 were 402s, but what were they called on the glovebox sticker? Were they all called 396s? or in 71-72 called 402s? thanks in advance... Lenny

I believe if you look by the steering box, the VIN should be stamped into the frame there.
Here is how you decode it: 1st digit is Chassis Designation: C= 2wd K= 4wd 2nd digit is Engine Type: S = 6cyl E= V8 3rd digit is the vehicle GVW: 1= 1/2 ton 2= 3/4 ton 3= 1 ton 4th digit is the bed type: 4=step 34=fleet 5th digit is the model year: 7= 67 8= 68 9= 69 0= 70 1= 71 2= 72 6th digit is the assembly plant 7th digit is the vehicle number starting with 100,000 Now, for the glove box ID... My 72 Burb's glove box ID is pictured below. It is a factory 402. It says "400 CID V-8 ENGINE" Hope this helps! L8R -Joe

I've always heard (someone may correct me on this) that back in the 67-72 erra, 1/2 ton trucks were all 6 or 5 lug depending on year model and all 3/4 ton trucks were 8 lug. If that's the case I'd lean towards saying you have a factory 1/2 ton truck.

Well, actually, my truck is 8 lug...
so, then if that is the case, it would be a 3/4 ton

depends on the buyer in all reality.
But for 99% of the ppl who would want your truck, the 8 lug wheels would decrease it's value. You can place 1/2 ton components under your 3/4 ton frame,a nd if you have the coil springs in back, then it is even easier, plus, the 3/4 ton trailing arms are beefed up over the 1/2 ton parts, but still a direct swap. As for the frame VIN, The whole vin won't be there, just a partial vin. It starts with the digit before the assembly plant, which would be the year. Bagged 91, the breakdown of the VIN that you have there is not acurate, and is commonly refered to....I think mostly becouse LMC has been screwing it up for years. Here is a link to the proper decoding of a 67 - 72 chevy with one minor oversight...in 72, a chevy truck would have a C in front of the VIN...in other words, it'd start CCExxxxxx instead of CExxxxxx. The added C means Chevy. If it were a T, then it'd be a GMC. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html |

Andy,
Thanks for pointing that out. I did the breakdown for him so he could check the #'s on the cab too... If you notice on the VIN of the glovebox ID I posted, it starts with the CC as you stated, and it's a 72' Chevy C20 Burb...

i believe the 71 bodys had a unique hump where the rear view mirror mounts making it easy to ID a 71cab

Hey Longhorn man, why would having 8 lugs decrease the value. Not trying to be a smart a$$, just wanted to know. I always thought that the heavier duty trucks were more sought after.
Thanks, Scott |

i think longhorns right , theres a better market for 1/2ton verses3/4ton pickups/// easier to get custom accessories and lend themselves better to custom touches---in over 40 some years foolin with cars i've never seen a set of 8lug torque-thrusts !!!

Most are not buying these trucks for working, most are for pleasure. The majority of the custom 8 lug wheels are for 4x4 use.

I agree with the custom wheel part but some people do prefer heavy duty frames. Look at all the yahoos on the road that have 1 ton duallys that don't need them.

A good way to find out what the market is, is to look on e-bay and look at what is bringing in what kind of money. The 4X4 trucks would probably be worth more in a 3/4 ton, however, for the 1/2 ton trucks, short wheel base 1/2 ton trucks bring in top dollar regardless of condition. (to an extent)
True, there will be the once in a while 1/2 ton LWB with a big block and tach and A/C and every option in the book...and that'll be worth more money to many many ppl...esp collectors, however, compair two trucks (talking 2 wheel drive here) of same condition, same option package and same options, one a 1/2 ton and one a 3/4 ton, odds are, the 1/2 ton will go for about 15 to 25% more than the comparable 3/4 ton. Hell, I sold a total turd of a SWB, rusted and beat to hell, not running, abused, 500,000 miles...and I still got 500 bucks out of it. Quote:
