Washed off the dust today.

Finally got the pics on here. I pulled the frame out and washed off the winter dust & cobwebs. Will prolly set the cab on next week. Can't wait to get started again!

I've had that cab on and off several times. With the doors off and the cab stripped, it takes 3-4 good strong bodies to get it on and off without straining. We pick up at the bottom of the rockers and once it's off one on each side and one at the front & rear. Two can do it, but I don't recommend it.

Not may have the foresight to buck the V8/Auto trend and keep the in-line and 3 speed column shift tranny. Good for you. It'll pay dividends in the long run with ease-of-maintenance and trouble-free simplicity.

Ease of maintenance & trouble free simplicity my arse. While I loved my 6cyl/3spd & I'm a huge column shift fanatic, the column shifter linkage & that trans leave much to be desired. How does one fix that? Swap in another 3spd column & then another trans.

A few months later.... that 'new' shift linkage keeps hanging up in gear (so much that it killed the clutch). You're finally fed up enough to cut a hole in the floor of your cab & stick in a floor shifter . . ..... only then to have the tranny start crapping out on you!

The simple, low maint fix?
Swap a tried & true sbc w/a turbo 350 trans.

I used to have the "lock up" problem too until an old guy showed me how to shift it properly. If you use a slow deliberate motion without ramming and jamming, that old linkage will give you years of trouble free operation. It's when you force things or try and "speed shift" that you run into problems. Like a lot of things, there is a right way and wrong way to do things. This system has outlived its usefulness in todays society due to driving conditions and a lack of patience in general. However, if maintained and used as intended, it is a simple and trouble free setup. I suspect the majority of problems with this setup can be directly attributed to the impatient and untrained "nut" behind the wheel.

And I mean this in the nicest way. Your not the only one that's been around these trucks for any length of time. I don't 'speed shift'. I use(d) slow, deliberate movements from gear to gear. As you stated, if you force the shift, it will most likely hang up.

I'm also not an impatient nut (not that you were calling me one). I've set up several of these column shift trucks that worked . . ..... for a while. Then the problems would start again requiring more adjustments. So I feel confident I can set one of these up adequately. I even ask questions in order to learn more & help identify some things I possibly missed.

You may love the 3spd columns as much or more than me, but for the average joe, the column shift auto has fewer issues w/day to day reliability . . ..... abused or not.

I am adding AC and PS to my 292, can you post some close up pictures of your pulleys and belt routing? I am having a hard time figuring out how it is supposed to be setup.

Thanks for the pictures, they are invaluable to me at this point.

What is the AC compressor bracket from?

Is your altenator pulley 1 or 2 groove, I have a 3 groove balancer but I probably am going to have a hard time finding a 3 groove water pump pulley no that it looks like I need one.

Arrow More cab install pics

Well, I finally got the cab on the frame Saturday. Had to do it with two (my son and I)... wasn't too bad. In response to CPNE, I plan on going back with as close to original as possible, except for the a/c, p/s & p/b. I will go back with the column shift.
For GeeEmm, the compressor brackets are from a late "70's van...I believe. Everything bolted up ok, just had modify that long support bracket from the compressor down to the front corner of the block. Pulleys are from the same.
The project has come to a stop over the past several months but this board has reignited the spark to get my butt in gear and start back on it. I enjoy surfing the site every day.

It is called an overslung air cleaner. Its like this to clear the brake booster. I figure I had better mention just in case you need to start looking for one. They aren't all that common and if you do find one it could be $$$$
