As far as I know the 283 was built from 56 - 67, I don't think there was any difference for GMC.

thanks guys. got a guy that says he's got a 69 or 70 gmc that i'm going to look at. when he said it had a 283 it threw up a red flag in my mind and i was just wandering if it could possibly original. hopefully its in good shape. he says it was running when he parked it, drained all water from the block and body is in fairly decent shape. only wants a couple hundred for it. we'll see. he's gonna get me some pics this weekend when he goes fishing on the piece of property its sitting at.

Someone could have dropped a 283 in it,remember 283 have real small balancer without bolt,if stock valve covers had Chevrolet script on them 32t have indented ones with square spot in middle for 327 sticker,i think all 283 were 2bbl?but i could be wrong on that???Hopefully it would be a 300HP 327 or Hipo Vette motor you never know.

If it is a 283 it could be anything. They were not all 2v. The power pack version was 4v and there was a dual quad and even fuel injected. The fuel injected version was the first motor ever put out buy a factory that made the magic 1 horsepower per cubic inch. If you get it I would check the numbers on the block, because if it was somthing special at one time, the block might be worth some money to a restro freak.
