700 R4 question
A woman I work with just totaled her 84 chevy van and told me I could have the 700R4 transmission out of it. What is required to get the converter lockupand is the 84 tranny any good? I assume I'd need a 4 speed auto steering column too.

Looking at your signiture, I wouldn't even think of it onless you put a bunch of $$ into the tranny.

yeah, the 87 - up tranny is supposed to be much better than the older ones. I'm not sure why. Aren't the Z-28 and corvette trannys beefier than others?? What parts are beefier inside them?

I agree that you want a 87-92 trans. Before 87 they had problems and after 92 they were computer controlled.

The input drums are different, the clutches are different, the pumps are different, the valve bodies are different and on and on and on. You can get a 700r4 built to take what you got, but its going to cost you. I just had my 84 updated to 1987 and up standards and it ran $1600. That was right here in Brememton. Prices are a little higher here for some reason. MikeP, I suggest you talk to Rick over at Transmissions Northwest, (360) 479-6896. He is who overhauled mine. Good luck, Jeff.

I did it
I just installed a 4L60 into my 69 SWB. Mine is a 92 Z-28 type that I got from GM Performance. I would still snag that 700R4, it would be good trading stock or you could beef it up for a future project. Ron
