Saving face?
I was admiring a GMC at a local shine and show this evening when a couple walked up from across the parking lot. As they walked up, the girl said, "its a '70 not a '72 like you thought." The guy responded by saying, "I have to see the truck from the back to know for sure."
I really don't know the difference between the different year models of GMCs. Is there anything about the back of a '70 GMC that differentiates it from a '72 GMC, or was the guy just trying to save face with his girlfriend?

I'd say the guy was just blowing smoke. From the back they all look the same to me. Now tell me where to meet a woman like that.

Maybe from the back he could look into the side mirror and see the door panels or maybe the tail light covers-didn't pretty much all cars have their year on them? Maybe not so much anymore. But I think I'm going with blowing smoke to save face.

70 to 72 difference would be the grill, rear view mirror to name two, both from the front!

That was my thought, I figured it couldn't be much different that the Chevys. BTW, the girl only knew it was a '70 because there was a for-sale sign on the dash.

The tail light trim 67-68, and not sure and maybe this is what longhorn was saying, but didn't they have small letters at first and then changed to big letters. Wasn't 67 the only year for letters on the grill.

70 - 72 all offered the exact same trim on the back, the tail gate trim and tail light trim was all exactly the same.
The 67 & 68 tail gates had smaller lettering than the 69 & up...I'll see if I can dig up some pics here... |

The first pic is of my old 69...the tailgate was actually off a 68. Notice the small letters. (the red truck with the rusty wagon wheel)
The second pic, is of a brown and tan 69 GMC longhorn...with the correct tailgate. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 07-17-2005 at 10:57 AM. Reason: I'm a non typin SOB |

Uhh... my 68 has a gate just like the second one with the big leters inside a recessed rounded rectangle. <say that 10 times real fast> and I know it is the original gate. there's a guy in town here with a 67 GMC. it has the small lettered gate like the first pic.
WTF?? Oh, wait a minute... now that I see mine in the same thread as yours I notice I am wrong. all hail the Longhornman

That's the small one. Look at how far out past the edges of the handle yours goes...then compair it to the brown one.
