H-pipe or X-pipe on exh.?
anybody out there runnin' an "h" or an "x",type cross-over pipe in thier exhaust sys.? i would like to run the x as the research shows better flow,kinda like mandrel bends in the exhaust tubing makes better flow.my thoughts are that if i go w/ the x type sys.won't that make the two sections of tubing come together thus making a ugly sight from the side?(i hate when you can see the tubing showing from a side angle,just my opinion.)i would think the h type would only need to be bent in the middle and keep the tubing up inside the running lines of the frame-rails. where does the h or x cross-over at to get minimal amt. of pipe showing? what you guy's got?

H-pipe is the most common and the easies to do. An X-pipe needs to cross over just behind the end of the trans. You might get better performance out of an X-pipe but only past 5000 rpm. The H-pipe does well for a street truck that your not drag racing all the time. You would really need to build one hell of a motor to notice any differance between the 2 on the street.

appreciate it slam i was wonderin' the perf. gains between the two. is the h pipe noticeable w/the side angle view.cant be havin' the exhaust work show.pet peeve,i guess!

I have an H pipe on my 70 and you cant see any pipe any where unless your on your belly.

I have my H pipe located just behind the trans crossmember,& it does not show from the side(straight shot between the ex pipes). you have to be laying on the ground to see it. The X pipe is a better set up,but much harder to install,& as Slam 33 posted,probably not a big diff between the X or H .......unless you are racing. 69 longhorn.

you'll get a slight torque increase with either but I belive you will get a mellower tone with the H-pipe

thanks guy's!just called the guy tonite and scheduled a day this next week to bring it over. he was asking me about what i was bringing over to him and i told him my swb.'68 chevy truck. he said that the rear trailing arms(or wishbone rear-end)trucks are harder to hide the bigger 2.5" tubing and that you have to go under it.....?how do you guy's have your's run?if you remember w/a shrtbd. there is no rear carrier bearing,and i believe my old truck that i once had (a'69 1/2 ton lngbd.) had holes on either side of the carrier bearing cross-member to run the exhaust through from the factory. correct me if i'm wrong.

If you have a big cam.......how does that change the sound of it ? Does it change the way the idle sounds, since your mixing both pipes? Just curious

stock profile 350 cam w/900-1100 rpm torque con. "stock profile cam": 204'-214' w/ .447" lift. not a thumper cam, but a cruiser cam. 1500=5500 effective rpm range.

BUXMAN66, To the best of my knowledge the factory crossmembers have no holes and the exhaust was routed underneath. Here are a couple links to a really nice exhaust installation but it doesn't appear to have any crossover. I think this is the type of installation your wanting but it requires some fabrication and modification of the crossmembers.
