BBC oil pump on SBC???
Ok,
I saw this in the "pay it forward" thread... what all is involved with this? What length pick up tube do you use? I know it has to be for a BBC oil pump, but again, what length. any help with this would really help! Thanks all! NutZ |

I'M NOT SURE ABOUT OIL PUMPS, BUT REPLACING SMALL BLOCK WATER PUMPS WITH STOCK BIG BLOCK WATER PUMPS IS THE SH!TS. THEY FLOW LIKE NO TOMORROW. JOHN

i've been told a big block oil pump on a small block will give you too much pressure, and you should probably just go with a high volume small block pump, it'll give you plenty. just my .02

cornutz, there is a very long and detailed article on oil pumps for small block Chevy's in How to Build Max Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget by David Vizard. Too much pressure and volume is as bad as too little. The stock pump is fine for 350-375 hp and 6500-6750 rpm. There are some mods to increase the performance of your existing pump by lapping the sides and grinding some small relief passages. The article also discusses installing a big block pump for extra volume, if needed. He spends considerable time on this subject and I can't condense it here. Knowing how you intend to run your engine will help you make an educated decision. You will come away from this exercise a small block oil pump expert compared to your friends!

I've often posted about Melling's improved pump design:
http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...part=MEL-10552 Only 10% increase over oem with superior design features and, I would expect, better longevity. Bolt on pickup (no welding needed), longer gear teeth, stronger cover, better supported shaft, etc.

Big block pump on a small block does not give too much pressure.
I ran a 350 for over 45,000 miles...with no problems (sold the car). |

Also..if you are rebuilding any Chevrolet V8 or installing a high volume pump....please spend the $10 or $15...and buy a heavy duty oil pump drive shaft!
