trans kit
My transmission is slipping in 3rd and 4th gear. The tranny is in a 98 z71 with a 4l60e. What is the best kit to rebuild the tranny with so that it will hold up. The truck has around 350hp, 9" of lift and will soon be putting 38" tires when the 35x14.5 wear out. Just want to have it strong enough so it doesn't come out again for a while.

Well I would say look at the upgrades on this page to get an idea of what can be had .. hxxp://www.tciauto.com/gm/gm_4L60E.htm it doesnt show all that can be had but gives you an idea..
Are you doing this yourself? I think in 98 there was a change again in the trans. but not sure what... There are alot of different places offering the same parts at lower prices you just have to look around..I even found a local trans place had alot of these upgrades instock and cheaper than I could order them for online...and yours could recommend and sell you a complete package for a decent price. I do recommend getting the beast sun shell as the stock one is weak and usually will fail...I also would get the larger boost valve and at least a corvette servo(says heavy duty) Put these in with new clutches and steels and buy a B&M or transgo shift improver kit..and it will last for a long time if put together right and the other parts are up to par. and checked before putting them back in.. If you dont have one put a drain plug in your pan while its off and look into a tranny cooler to work inline with the radiator one.. You might want to look into a lower set of gears for your diffs. so your not putting the strain on the trans. its probally shifting in and out of lockup and 3rd and 4th more than normal with the lower rpms its running at with the 35s and then 38s are going to drop the R's even more..With the computer controlling all the shift points from the engine rpm and speed it could help save this rebuild more than anything... |

was going to have it built but am wanting to learn how. I am really good with tools and can work on just about anything. I was planning to play with a th350 and see how it turned out. Is it that hard to rebuild one? I would try but am afraid of messing my 4l60e up. If it is not that hard I may buy a book and try it.

If you found a good book with a step by step and pictures theres no reason you couldnt do it yourself... I never done a th350 but the 700r and 4l60e are very easy to do though and will always do my own.Like you I didnt want to mess my first one up and it took me alot longer then but once you do it you will be suprised how simple they really are and how quick you can do one..
Get a GM rebuild kit with the steels or similar kit and add upgrades,read/understand everything before you start it...it will take you a day or so to complete it after you start..pull it apart and leave everything complete as possible at first and put the parts in order as they came out will help alot also.. Be carefull and dont overtighten any of the bolts going into the case..use vasoline to hold the check balls in place and thrust washers/bearings... and dip all your new clutches in clean fluid before you put them in.. I would go with 4.56 gears for 38s if you could but the cost is probally not probable to do so, Thought somewhere I read 3.73 was good for 33s and not much larger than that? Im sure it would help you alot though.... Last edited by warrior1; 08-30-2005 at 01:12 PM. Reason: Because I can?? |
