Score!!
I went next door to check and see how my hillbilly mechanic neighbour was making out with his engine swap in his beater 71 GMC. He bought this truck for $500, swapped the tranny to an automatic because he is missing half of his left foot, painted it in his driveway with rustoleum gloss black and has his drivers bucket seat sitting on 4 pieces of ready rod. I have pics of this thing on my computer at home I'll have to post.
Anyways..............he was complaining that he couldn't find a friggin starter to fit the 350 that was in the truck, so he shimmed one up. It worked for a while until the shimming gave out and the nose cone buckled in the housing. He got pissed off yank the engine and is putting in his .20 bored over 350. So he gave me the old engine out of the truck if I wanted it. I ran the casting number thru www.mortec.com and found out it's a 4 bolt 400!!! and the thing has also been bored, but this one is .30 over!! I have al the parts to make a complete engine out of it except for the heads. Looks like Shawnas 58 might have a little bit bigger engine dropped in now. Save the 283 for a rainy day So he told me to either take the block and put it in my shed or he'll just haul it to the dump, so needless to say, it's comin home tonight!

Why does this never happen to me!?!
You know, if your neighbor were a board member he'd probaby still have that engine in his GMC. You should tell him about the board - AFTER you secure ownership of the engine! |

he's a non-technology kinda guy. He was retired off from the mine on disability and is in his mid 60's. He's a great guy! Actually I shouldn't say it was free, I traded him a set of ramhorms for the engine

!Score! is right!
I guess someone could have told him that there is a specific starter for autos and manuals... A 408ci small block is a real nice place to start. From 250 to 1000hp.. all it takes is money when you start from there.. lol

I get a different frame of thought when I see 'score!' and 'dubie' along with 'Canada'.
Killer trade and you did just what he asked. Both of you should be happy or should I say he is happy and you are ecstatic. What are the specs of the 400 block and heads?

not sure of all the engine specs yet, and the engine came with no heads. SO I'll have to piece it together once we get all set up to get on the engine

Awesome deal!!! Just be sure to get heads with steam holes in them (or have them drilled) when you put it back together!

That's almost the way I got my 350 4 bolt main that's in my GMC. My brother in law had it in a 78 c10 and it smoked when he'd crank it up. So he bought another truck that had a good running 350 and 350 turbo and asked me what I'd charge to do the swap for him. I said the old motor and tranny. he said ok. so I swapped them for him. It was all stock so I wanted to put my chrome oil pan on and when I pilled the old one off I saw 4 bolt mains! I done a little work to it and replaced the worn cam with one I had that was a little bit bigger than stock (let's say it hits a mean lick). I repainted it and added some chrome valve covers and headers and now it resides in my truck. Neither one of was out much money and we both were happy in the end.

Well your truck can sit in the other stall while Tim's truck sits in the rain. Hey, is he going to do the flames on it or do I have to come back up there?
