Found my Cam Problem in the Big Block

When I built my 454 I used a Comp Cam #11-207-3 this is a 270 duration cam with a 510 lift. It sounded like a solid lifter cam that was out of adjustment. I called Comp and told them my problem and they sold me another cam (same #) at cost and said to see if that fixed it. It DID NOT FIX IT, It still sounded nasty. After putting out $350 to have my lifter bores reconditioned and trying it again I Still had the same problem. I mean this thing was loud and nasty. A local machine shop said that they used that same cam and had the same problem in a few Big Blocks that they built. They said to use Comp Cam #11-242-3 a split duration 268 / 280 Cam with a 520 lift. The noise is gone and the performance is Sweeeet.

I called Comp and told them of my problem and that I wasn’t very happy after changing out the cam 3 times.

I'm waiting on there answer and will keep you all informed IF they call back

I think the magnum series was one of their earlier versions of more aggressive high lift cams, the xtreme series is newer and maybe more refined, I've run a comp and crane in my sbc with similar numbers, they both make noise, guess thats why the stockers have such long ramps, but yours must have been really bad, my next cam will probaly be a crane, not comp, machist told me of trouble comp had a few years back with base circle runout and quality control issues, as they farm out the grinding to some other companies, not sure if they do all there own now or not - just my 2 cents.

How does the new cam sound as far as "lopeyness" is it nice or barely noticable?

I know it takes alot to make a big block shake...so i was curious as i have that cam in my 396 (that i haven't even started yet)

It has a fair lope to it. I like it, but thats what I wanted. It comes on very strong on low end and holds though 5000 RPM

Comp just called to make sure warrantee guy had called. When I said he had NOT he asked me to send all my receipts to them. So I sent the $763.02 in receipts and we'll see what happens.
