timed dome light

For those of you that want your dome light to stay on for a while after opening the door and closing it. I found a timer kit in Street Rodder but it sells for $49.00

I found a timer unit in Radio Shack comercial catalog for just $32.00 it is fully adjustable from1 sec to 60 min. it should be set to ground and installed in the white wire to the dome light. This is the same wire you need to use to install door pins to make the light operate by opening the doors. model ELK960 delay timer

The only advantage of the first timer is it is deactivated with the ignition switch, but the Radio Shack timer can be set to go off at a resonable time to be usefull.

Sorry just now got a chance to answer. I'm sure Longhorn mail that there is a timer if the dome has delay but beats me where it is, or if it could be seperated for use in something else.If any one has access to wiring diagrams or knows a suitable donor let us know,might be a cheap way to go.

GM's probably going to be your best bet on the timer module. Depending on what functions you want it could be as simple as a 4 wire hookup or up to 50 wire hookup. I can pull wiring diagrams for any of this we need....
Camaro, Ninety-Eights, Corvettes and a few others had a small version of a body module that would control: Parking lights,Interior lights, radio,power windows and seatbelt release's.

Cool think about these would be the time delay on the lights when you open/close the doors.

If you had enough time and will, you can wire in the radio, powerwindows and interior lights to operate even when the key is turned off. When you open the doors these things will turn off.


I'll dig through my alldata and see which donor will be the easiest to install. Sounds very do-able though.

Zkast check out a 96 trans am, I have one of those ready to give up its goodys. I don't know what all it had before it was wrecked. I just bought it for the engine and trans.

Search the Camaro thirdgen site in electronics. Tim and I went around on this a couple of times. I have 2 working sset-ups in my truck. You want the delay, but a shorter delay if you get out with the engine running.

Yup, I know that my '97 Z28 has it, as well as the '96 Chevy truck I used to have. So anything along those years will most likely have it.


<EDIT>I also forgot to mention. The truck used to just turn off the light, but in my Z28 it slowly fades out. Which is also kinda cool.
