Which grill is this and whats it worth?

I've been out of the loop for a long while, forgive me. Long story short, had to get an old Mazda for MPG, then bought a new Focus, now its a show car.
Now on topic:
I bought this grill like 5 years ago to replace my bent and rusted one. When I bought it it was primered and I was jst going to colormatch it to the truck. Well it turned out it was for a different year and the mounting points or something were wrong, I forget.
Well I found it a while back with a bad scratch on it, but it appeared to be chrome under the primer. So I striped the primer and had this:

So my question is, what year was this from or will fit? And how much is it worth?
I would say its in 7 out of 10 conditon for an orignal piece.

I don't know value, but it looks like a 69-70 GMC grill (like mine).

Perhaps even a 71 gmc? not sure I'm at work and can't check my 71 but, check the vendor web sites on this board, see what new ones are going for.... it has some minor rust & scratches.... 50% of new might be a good place to start and see what kind of offers you get.

I was aware that you could buy repro grills. At least when I was building mine I couldnt find any.

It`s a 68-69 or 70.They changed to a wider center bar with black accents. In the last couple years they have become available reproed.I`d say it`s worth what a reproduction costs if it`s perfect. It looks real nice!

check the classicheartbeat site..... $399., "show quality". Also some great photos to compare yours to, to see if it's a 69-70 or 71-72.

That is a 68 - 70 GMC grill.
It is damn nice, but I see pitting...don't hold your breath for 400 bucks.

Re: Which grill is this and whats it worth?

I saw one at a swap meet this last weekend. It was at least as nice, maybe a little nicer. They were asking $175 and I am pretty sure $150 would have taken it. I thought about getting it as a spare for my 1970 GMC, but decided to spend my money on other stuff.

Re: Which grill is this and whats it worth?

As a side note, it will work on a 67 or on the 71/72...but would not be 100% correct.
But it will bolt on and line up though.

If you would like to make it look even nicer to keep you could sand that down starting with 400 grit and moving you way up all the way to 2000 grit sandpaper and buff like new. Nice find.

Re: Which grill is this and whats it worth?

Its a 68-70 GMC grill, 71-72 had a raised portion on either side of center vertical bar that they painted black in between raised portions.
It can be used on all 67-72 GMC's though as long as correct top bar is used for style of hood installed. IE- A 67-68 Hood requires a 67-68 top bar to use with any 67-72 GMC grill, a 69-72 hood requires a 69-72 GMC top bar to use with any 67-72 GMC grill.

Would this work on all '67-'72 grills? Also, would this take out scratches? When you say "and buff" what kind of compond?

Re: Which grill is this and whats it worth?

The chrome seems too thin on the GMC grills I've examined to sand with 400, and if you break through to steel you might as well give it up. If you attempt this be real carefull when sanding near the edges as it will be easier to sand through the plating.

Re: Which grill is this and whats it worth?

Sand chrome? Why not buff`n`polish? The thing ain`t that ruff.I wouldn`t call it ruff at all.Just could be a little shinier. The 69-72 Chevy grilles aren`t chromed steel. They are hard anodized aluminum. All you could do is strip the anodizing(easier said than done),polish/buff,then either re-anodize,clear powdercoat,or what I`d do if I was going through all that, chrome it.One other choice is buy a new grille. That`s pretty much what everybody does.
