Re: Hood to Cowl Seal

The seal screws underneath the front of the cowl (with the same screws that hold the cowl down, if you buy a new seal it should be slotted for these screw holes), under the hood. When you close the hood, the "bumped out" area at the back of the hood makes contact with the seal (which sticks above the cowl) and seals the water from getting your engine/distibutor etc. wet.

EDIT: You can't see the seal when the hood is closed, it sticks above the cowl, but still under that back edge of the hood.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal

The one I bought wouldn't work right due to the shape. It made the hood stick up in the back. It looks to me like they should be shaped close to a "C" rather than an "L" like the one I got to allow the hood to shut properly.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal

I bought one from LMC that was shaped like an "L". It prevented my hood from closing. I threw it in the trash and reinstalled the old cracked one.

I had the same problem. Got mine from LMC. It was too stiff. I installed it anyway (my old one completly split in two) and after the hood being closed for 2 years it's squished down like it should be.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal

Kinda of interesting that the LMC catalog shows the correct seal in the exploded view. It shows it being more of a sideways V shape, not an L shape. I have a new one at home from Presicion???, but haven't installed it yet, nor do I remember what shape it is. I will look tommorrow and get and let you know.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal

Just opened brand new seal from Precision....it to is L shaped. I have not installed it yet, so don't know if it will hold the back of the hood up or not.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal

Glad to help on the part number.

There are actually quite a few parts still available from the General for these old trucks. I've often seen stuff listed on Ebay as NOS that is readily available from the local Chevy dealer.

Green Machine,
Who did you order it through? I called my local dealer and one In NC and they didn't have it. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

This thread is from 2005 so they may no longer be available. Green Machine hasn't been on the board since 8/11/2014 so you may not get a reply either

I bought one from GMpartsDirect.com quite a few years ago now, wish I had grabbed a couple more. The fit is perfect and they're "soft".

I think most places were sold out of them several years ago, if that partsgiant place is the only one that has them left... grab 'em now!

Does the seal mount between the cowl and body or on top of the cowl?
Thanks
