6cyl chrome valve cover
Today at a boneyard I found a old 6 lying on the ground, I believe a 235? It has a Chevrolet chrome script valve cover on it. I was wondering if these are the same as the 250 cover, it looks the same.
I saw quite a few non chrome ones also. Is the chrome one a optional item? certain year deal? Its not aftermarket. He wanted $50 for the whole engine with the 3spd or $25 for the valve cover. |

The older series sixes had a larger head, covers do not interchange between the 216/235/261 and the 230/250/292. The older cover is rectangular with rounded corners and has 4 flange holes for attachment.
Only original covers I have seen for the older series have been painted. There is one oufit importing new stainless steel covers. Here's a shot of my 235. It has the 216 cover, held on with two valve train studs instead of the 4 flange bolts. http://www.thriftauto.com/fredsengine.jpg

I understand the scripted "Chevrolet" valve cover was carried into the L-22 series for the first year at least. I have a 292 core motor I bought from a guy who kept the original scripted alpine green valvecover for another project. The block checked out to be made in Nov 1962 for the '63 model year. Chevy kept the first 292s that light green as a carryover from the old series 261s which (I guess) were painted green to tell them apart fron the smaller displacement motors [235s] in blue. By '67 all GM engines were orange.
Tom Langdon www.stoveboltengineco.com does sell an adapter to mount the old stlye 4-bolt valvecover on a newer L-22 head w/ the 7 bolts. Tempting if you can score a cast finned aluminum cover that looks cool. Another advantage would be to allow more headspace under the valve cover for fancy roller rockers and stud girdles. Since I can't afford the finned aluminum one, I painted my stock valve cover hi-temp cast iron gray. LOL
