found a 71 gmc, what do you think? **UPDATE**
I came across a 71 gmc shortbed today... at, ps, pb, ac(no compressor), body is strait, very little rust, it has a front clip of a chevy 67 or 68, and rear leaf springs??? cosmetically, its not pleasing to the eye, it had the bed full of junk and was completely semi-primered(ha ha), along with a ragged interior. Its got a 350 and a tranny from an 88 suburban. $4500 firm. 1st off, whats the deal with leaf springs in the back? is that a problem or ??? I am not gonna put this in a show, I dont think, but want it to look sharp. Am I, or maybe the owner, outta range here? I dont know much about the gmc's, someone help me out please...

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
IMO most GMC's had leaf and Chevy's had coil. You could order either one with either spring but I believe the default order was GMC leaf and Chevy coil. Just my observations over 15years of yard hopping.
Good luck - Bob

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
$4,500 seems high, very high to me.....around here for that kinda money, a really good conditioned 2wd drive can be found for a grand or two less......please do not jump on something just because its there.....I had to drive over 200 miles to find mine(not far at all compared to the drive others have made), but shop around a little, I look in the weekly autotrader every week, and probably come across 4 or 5 of these trucks for less that appear to be in better shape....with the internet and a little looking, anything can be found in a good price range. This board will help you find whatever you could possibly be looking for....if you can't travel, find what you want, and ask if someone on the board can look at something for you....I had someone look at a 69 3/4t in IL for me....saved me from driving 300 miles to look at a complete POS! Let me know if you find anything in michigan you want looked at.....
www.cctol.com is a great place to look, also cars.com and craigslist.org will have local listings in your area....good luck!

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
just as an example, in this weeks truck trader, there is a 67 swb (looks to be big back window) just down the road from me for $5,000 that has already been dropped, and looks to be in amazing shape.....they are out there!

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
seems very high for a non original truck// the different front clip could spell frame damage from a crash what's hidden under the primer??? etc etc

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
On this side of the country the description sounds like a $1500-2000 truck.

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
4500.00 seems high.if it's running I'd say 2500.00. if not 1000.00 at most.
living in the rust belt most of our trucks are imports from the southwest and thats the prices i've seen. 4500.00 is a truck with good paint and interior, runs down the road pretty straight. my.02

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
I can say first hand be afraid - be very afraid. I bought what was suposed to be a clean, garaged kept, "minimal rust" truck for $4500. Had it shipped down to Florida and the rest is history (see my signature). I'll never buy another truck sight unseen - unless it's from a well known board member of course. Half primered and bed full of junk? There's something he's not wanting folks to see untill he's ........ :bansex:

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
Longhorn, grendel and racer face-I gotchya there... I probably just need to see it w/o all the junk in it and drive it. Something I failed to mention, I saw it at a GoodGuys show. There were only (2) 67-72 trucks for sale down there.
grendeljimbo... did you get it from ebay or something? 4000 seems to be the average going price... whether it has all the options or none of them. Sorry to hear about your scandal... |

Nah - a board member posted an add that he had seen and I contacted the fella. The guy had owned it for over 20 years and then had a buddy of his do all the body work (which he felt was top notch). In listening to him talk about the truck I'm certain he felt sincere about what he was selling. All in all I'm not bidder nor upset I was just expecting alot more. I could go on and on but this is your post about your find...

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
BUYER BEWARE!!!
I was browsing ebay and now the guy has it listed... He never told me it had: *VEHICAL HAS A 2 WHEEL DRIVE BLAZER CHASSIS *A SWB PICKUP BOX SHORTENED NINE INCHES TO MAKE IT A "SUPER SHORT" *-I asked how it was lowered, he said he didnt know--->4" DROP SUSPENSION*-I drove it...it couldnt shift or get over about 40mph, although the rpm was up to 3500-4000! and he said it just needed an adustment --->NICE NEW 700R4 OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION WITH HEAVY DUTY CORVETTE INNARDS *yada, yada, yada..... *what does this mean?--->truck will need a tv cable adjustment before roadworthy Sorry, but the bottom line is guy was dishonest with me... I saw him at a local auction, thats when I drove it and he still didnt mention any of this new stuff, apparently no one wanted it at the auction either... so BUYER BEWARE here is the link... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevr...QQcmdZViewItem Last edited by redneckdds; 11-27-2005 at 04:16 PM. |

Re: found a 71 gmc, what do you think?
Dude, stay away from that one...That thing has been on ebay for at least the last month in a half or so...I saw it before I bought mine on Oct 15th. NOBODY wants it
Try going to the Pomona Swap meet here in SoCal. Last one there were nearly 2 dozen 67-72's in various condition for sale. Granted a lot of them were overpriced, but they will negotiate. I am going next Sunday (Dec 4th) to try and find an inner grille and pass fender. Mike |
