Starting Problem Question

In the morning when I start the burb, I have been gettign what sounds like a backfire under the hood. After a few tries it will start and run fine. When the truck has been running during the day it never seems to be a problem when I start it. Only when it sits over night. Any ideas?

Sounds like the morning dew is getting under the distributor cap.

Thanks for the input, but there is not much morning dew in Phoenix.

What kinda carb? Could it be leaking into manifold?

BTW, I looked long and hard for 67-68 burb trim at Carlisle, no luck. Talk about rare.

RodC, thanks for looking. It is an edelbrock 1406 carb. Like I said, once it starts and runs, there are no problems for the whole day. It only seems to be when it sits over night and is started up for the first time.

Hey 68 Suburban, would you perchance have a heat insulator gasket under the 1406? If not then when you drive it for a while and then shut it off overnight the fuel in the carb could be percolating, in other words boiling which will make it very hard to start the next morning. That is what was happening with mine, I have a 1406 with a Performer RPM intake manifold and I had to buy the gasket for it, the Edelbrock part # is 9266 Divided heat insulator gasket. Maybe this will help!!

BLACK AND BLUE 67-72, thanks for the idea. I don't have an insulator. I will have to check into it. Thanks

Black and blue, I am running that carb with no spacer at all, and I do suffer from the boiling gas, but only when I kill it hot and try to restart it shortly afterwards. first thing in the morning, I just have to crank it to fill it back up with fuel.
68, I am asuming you have checked all the silly stuff, idle speed, plugs, cap & rotor...
Have you looked at the timing or the advance unit? I have had that happen a time or two, but never on a regular basis.
