? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
Those of you who have done this Classic Performance Products Bolt-In C-Notch, did you have "issues" with the 2 bolts on the outside rear portion of the driver's side notch? On my setup the lower more forward of the two is directly in line with the 2 bolts that come in from the bottom. The other bolt hole is directly in line with the crossmember that is just behind the rear end, and the bolt won't go all the way in. I'm thinking that I will just drill some more holes that aren't in line with anything, but I figured I would ask to see what others have done for this situation, if you even had the same problems.
Thanks in Advance,

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
Had the same problem with mine, I just used a half inch shorter bolt. Not quite as "easy" of a project as I thought, of course I was doing it on a 69 Suburban with the body still on.

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
Hell it ain't easy with the bed off of my truck. I hate grinding rivets!! I guess it might have gone a little smoother if I had a plasma cutter & a fire hammer.

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
I used an air chisel on most of mine. That is a tool worth it's weight in gold! It's just funny reading the directions. I think it list 5 or 6 steps!!!! Are you kidding me? I think I have about 8 hours in the project and about 3 to go. Are you using lowering blocks also? I added some 1 1/2 inch blocks. I'm wondering if I'm going to need a shock relocation kit? I guess I can add that later. I popped the rivets out of my upper shock brackets and bolted them in just in case I want to change it later. I'll try to put some pics up when I get done.

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
Yeah I'm using 2" "homemade" lowering blocks. I already had ECE's 6" rear drop kit (springs, super panhard, and shock relocators). I put this notch in so that I could use the blocks to get it a littler lower without having to switch to airbags (yet). I can tell you that with ECE's shocks and relocaters and the 2" blocks, I can jack the rearend all the way into the notch without the shocks bottoming out. If you need I can get some pics real quick.
Yeah the directions are a joke!

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
I'm assuming that since your running airbags you would like to see how everything fit with it all bottomed out, right?

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
Here ya Go!
The first pic is just an overall shot, but you can see my 2x2 square tubing lowering blocks. The second pic shows how I "clearanced" the upper shock crossmember, because the differential was hitting it. The third and fourth pics show the clearance between the c-notch and the u-bolts on each side. The fourth pic is kinda blurry but it has the same amount of cleance as the driver's side which is roughly 1/8 of an inch. BTW these are taken with the axle tubes pressed up on the bump stops.

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
These two pics show the clearance on the super panhard bar from ECE. I don't think you would be able to sit the tube all the way into the notch with only a 1-1/2" block, There is less than 3/8" of clearance between mine and the frame.

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
I had to leave town today for a couple of weeks, so I still need to get the shorter bolts, put springs back in and put the bed on. I guess I'll finally get to see what it looks like a couple of days before Christmas.

Oh, Yeah, of course. It should level my truck out a little better. I had a 4.5/6 drop but my front tires are 26" tall with 29" tall rear tires.
you got any pics of yours?

That looks good Rob! You're making me jealous... Maybe I can convince the wifey that I've been a good enough boy to get some bags for Christmas. How tall are the tires that you are running?
I noticed your 48 is for sale, what'cha asking for it? My brother has been looking for one for awhile.

Front tires are 25.5, rears are 28. After I get the body work done and the new engine (5.3/4L60E), I'll probably put a set of 20's on it.

Re: ? about 67-72 "Bolt-In" C-Notch
I installed 2" lowering blocks when I installed the c-notch. I put the ECE bracket below the lowering block and used the bottom hole. It is close but it doesn't hit the notch/frame when lowered. I may trim the ECE bracket to get a little more clearance, but so far it hasn't been a problem.

I modified my ECE bracket by adding two side plates to move the mounting hole down approximately 2.5", fixed the clearance issues.

Ok, here is what I did. In the photo you can see the rear side plate I added, plus where I had to trim the corner off the bracket. This is before I added 2" blocks and ran new brake lines behind the axle.
I made this simple drawing of what I did. Imagine the view as looking from the differential towards the ECE bracket as installed. |
