GMC question
found a GMC truck,5 lug, emblem in the grille, has a a blown up 350 w/ a turbo 400, ps, pb, and also has 3 gas tanks. 2 of the tanks are the type with the fill neck in the rear wheel wells. Non slopped hood type, I think. My questions is, are the fuel tanks a option to order from factory or a dealer add on? The lady is asking $1000 for the truck, gunna make her a offer this weekend, pics to follow on Sunday or Monday.

Re: GMC question
If the filler necks are in the wheel wells, they are probably neither stock nor dealer, but aftermarket add on. At least, I have never seen anything from the dealer nor factory like that.
All the dealer ones I have seen have large stainless square doors on the bed sides, towards the front. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 01-01-2006 at 11:29 AM. |

Re: GMC question
My '67 GMC had 2 dealer installed aux. tanks, and they had the filler neck doors on each side.

Re: GMC question
dual saddle tanks=loooooong road trip cruiser.
I used to have a 66 long fleet with this also. I was told it was a dealer option.

Re: GMC question
I had a 71 GMC 1500 that had the three tank setup on it. It looked to be dealer installed, the three position hand valve was mounted on the floor cloes to where your seat slide handle is. Only the main tank works the gauge, the aux. tanks were plastic with metal cast in where the cap screwed on. Code N03 is a daul tank opt. code calling for a 37 gal. cap., both aux. tanks combined were probable close to that. Good luck at the fuel pump filling all three.

Re: GMC question
Not your question but - the only year GMC was "on" the grill was 67. In 68 they moved it to the hood with the slanted type. In 69-72 they used the square type hood with GMC on the hood.

Re: GMC question
Bob Moore`s right. The truck has had some "switchin`round" done. The only factory aux.tanks were on the driver`s side with a stock-like filler cap located in the upper area of the bed and the neck was boxed in on the inner bedside.Aftermarket tanks were either like yours or filled through access doors installed in bedside. Many companies made aux.tanks for all the truck brands back then.

Re: GMC question
You mentioned it needs an engine, and the cost is $1000 ... Is it a REAL nice truck? IMO, that sounds a little steep.

Re: GMC question
Pretty sure you have a 72 from grill, serial and all. Looks to be a really nice truck. Even with a blown motor it would go for a grand down here. Good luck with the deal.

Re: GMC question
Well, I have to say, that is pretty darn close to being a REAL nice truck. I'll sit here and chew on my foot for a while.
I like how it has all the right options, and no option packages. If you get that (it's a72 by the way) I would remove that extra brake line and cap that sucker off, or remove the adapter all together. (old school trailer brake set up if I'm not mistaken) Between that and the HD step bumper and HD rear springs, (notice the leafs are listed as an option...)not to mention the extra fuel tanks... That sucker was used to pull a trailer of decent size, camper or something. The tranny may well be pretty tired and worn out too. I would also look for cracked leafs in the leaf packs. Interesting/odd... the M49 Turbohydramatic tranny option... has an astric after the listing. What color is it inside? I don't see a listing for the int color. Re: GMC question
I have a extra motor and a 400 short shaft for something like this OR this other one I found. I need one of the 2 trucks cause I move (trailer) vehicles on weekends for a car dealer. Gotta chose which one would be a better puller/driver.

Re: GMC question
Well, they are equipped about the same, and look like cousins, but the Chevy has a sway bar up front, and it is a 3/4 ton while the GMC is a 1/2 ton.
The GMC should have the 3.07 gears, which would rock on the freeway, but suck with a trailer...also that gear with a load would put a hell of a strain on an automatic tranny. On the flip side, the 4.10 gears that the Chevy should have in it weill make your ears bleed on the freeway spinning 3000+ RPM just to keep up with the yuppies in there Volvos. Since you already have the pretty truck, and you are just looking for a beater work truck, I'd go with the Chevy my self. Plus, if the Chevy is not a runner, it would definately be cheaper. From the mold starting to cover it, I'm guessing it's sat for 6 months or so. The slots on the Chevy are awsome, but they'll be 16.5's and that means the tires would be kinda pricey once you locate them. Later model 16's would be better, but not nearly as cool as old school slots. |
