Re: the 71 died on me ..

Yes it could be your regulator, but check the alternator first. I know way back, we always use to put on a new regulator when we swapped alternators. Why?..I don't really know, probably some old wives tale about them needing to match up.

if it is the alternator and you are still on an ext. voltage regulator i'd remond switch in to an internal. my ext volt reg went bad and i got 3 of them from the parts store and all of them didn't work right so i sent 38.88 on an int reg alternator of an 83 chevy k-10 4x4 with 305 took about 30 mins heres the link http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=119379 just follow it is is alsome

All newer vehicles get a new reg. when alternator is replaced,so...
Check connections first.

Re: the 71 died on me ..

What kind of ignition system? Points/Condenser or HEI?

Reason I ask is I had a problem when the wire inside the distributor to the pickup module, had a break that only showed up when I let off of the gas, letting the "breaker" plate move as the vacuum level changed (increased). It may be clutching at straws, but I can't be the only one who ever has had that problem.

That's where I'd start, battery terminals and wiring at the alt.
