Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
Insurance has written me an estimate to fix the damage to my cab by replacing the entire back of it with a replacement panel. I was wondering if anyone knows for sure if this is or isn't actually produced? I could not find this anywhere online. I am talking about the metal basically from the rear window down to the bottom of the cab and the entire width of back of the cab.
I already checked Shermans with no luck. I was hoping that this was not produced forcing them to replace the entire cab... Thanks for any help.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
I've seem them before, but not for our trucks. You may want to clarify what they mean. They may no be intending to replace it with a "new" replacement panel, but rather one that is from a junkyard truck. If your truck has all new rust free rockers, floorboards, etc... it may be eaiser to let them pay someone to replace just the back half? If you can, I'd also check the aliginment of the roof and door jambs. That was a hard hit, the whole cab may be twisted. Once again, sorry 'bout your truck, it was absolutely one of my favorites.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
Yeah I've never seen them made for our trucks either. I was hoping that they did not make that piece for our trucks so that they would be more or less forced into replacing the cab, mainly because I am fearful that the whole thing is tweaked. I'm not sure how you go about proving that to the ins company but I'll leave that up to the body shop.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
I checked around on my suppliers and I couldn't find one for a 67-72 truck.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
So did you swap the VIN tags also? Most of the cabs I've seen in the kind of condition mine was in go for $1000 plus.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
I know a guy who had a NOS one with one of the corners removed to use as a patch panel. He still might have it and for a price might part with it. It's been a couple of years since I talked to him. You could always salvage one from another cab and then use corner patch panels to fill in if there was any rust. As far as a repro goes I think you are going to be sol.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
Huggercst had an NOS 1967 panel, you can ask him if you only need the lower part.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
I really just need to find a clean cab. I would prefer not to graft in any sheet metal like that.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
It is technically illegal to swap VIN plates on a vehicle in most (all?) states, so I'm not sure if anyone would admit to it. If I had to cab swap and the frame was in good shape, I would probably plate swap also if there was no way to find out otherwise.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
GM had these back panels at one time, but surely depleated. No reproductions.I guess you figured the labor vs complete cab syndrome out.Around here,to replace a cab-back would run around $1500,it`s a big job.I have an original paint,rust-free`71 cab(from back east!)that is damaged in the rear,a nice cab-back-to-w/s post section and will wait`til I can do it myself. The other choice is junk it.But,I don`t want to do that.Maybe in years to come it will become worth it.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
I wonder what I should put for a market price for a nice rust free cab ready to paint. I was thinking $1000-1500 that should take into account shipping if necessary don't you guys think?

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
Sounds fair to me. Hell, AZ is pretty much right next door and there's bound to be a rust free cab there. If you can score the whole truck for that much, there's a chance you can recoup some cash as well.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
Early classic enterprises shows that they have a really nice complete 69 AC cab for sale for $1500 in their "used parts" section on their website. Not sure how often that is updated. It looks really solid in the pics.http://earlyclassic.com/

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
$1,500 is fair.I see $1,200-1,500 for rustfree cabs.Considering the work involved and the cost of labor(and hopefully ending up with rustfree),it`s a bargain.

Re: Back of cab sheet metal panel even made?
I like 95% rustfree claims.I figure 5% would be the rockers, cab corners, the union between floor and kick panel, and maybe a few pinholes in the header panel and vents in the cowl.
