High pitch noise??
I have had a high pitch noise coming from my truck for a while, of course I hardly ever drive it, but when I do, I get reminded. It comes from the front of the transmission, and varies with speed. At certain speeds it's almost not there. If I throw it into neutral, it stops. Doesn't seem to be engine related. I have a small block with a TH400 Tranny. Thanks..........

Re: High pitch noise??
It changes pitch with speed. I suppose it could be u-joints, although they are about 10 years old, with about 5k miles.

Re: High pitch noise??
I would have suspected speedo cable, but if it disappears when coasting, squelch that idea.

Re: High pitch noise??
I've heard a couple of T-400's that had kind of a whiny turbine sound, but they worked fine for years and years. It's similar to a Powerglide in low gear, or a turbocharger spooling up.

Re: High pitch noise??
My th400 sounds like that untill it warms up about 1 minute or so I think it is the gears in the th400.

Re: High pitch noise??
Thanks guys, it could be a th400 thing. It does seem to calm down after driving it a long time but it never goes away. The converter I bought brand new from B&M when I bought the tranny new from TCI probably less than 5k miles ago. Then the TCI died as they usually do, then I got a kit from TPI, and had it slapped in there, and after that, about 3 years after that is when it started with the noise. It might just need use, as I hardly ever get to drive this truck, and is hard to afford to drive it with the super poor gas mileage.

Re: High pitch noise??
My motorhome did that . It had a th400 and my trans guy that rebuilt it said that heavy duty th400's have strait cut gears. And they wine. The other th400's have helical cut gears and dont wine. So you have a heavy duty th400.

Re: High pitch noise??
That makes sense, because as far as performance, it performs very well. Of course it does leak out some tranny fluid onto the garage floor when it's parked for long periods of time, but I've had that with all my older GM cars if they stay parked long.

Re: High pitch noise??
Yank's truck does/did that. Sounded like he had a blower. Found out it was the Torque Converter.

Re: High pitch noise??
My TH400 in my C20 was making a whining noise when I first bought it. It would get a little better when it warmed up. Noise was from the transmission and a filter change eliminated it. Cheap thing to try.
