X-pipe experience
i have a '69 C-10 w/350 and i am about to have new exhaust put in. i am currently running a "H" pipe but i plan to go to an X-pipe instead. Does anyone have any experience with installing x-pipes? more specifically, where to place the x-pipe. I understand that there is an optimum location to place it, but how do you find that location?

Do a search, this has been discussed around here over the years countless times. The function of either is to equalize pressure, and IMO the H pipe does it equally as well as an X pipe, so why go to the extra expense and trouble of creating an X when the H does the job. Some purests seem to think that the position, etc., can increase HP, but really, any difference would be measured in very small numbers. HP is made by the engine IMO, and exhaust tweaks are not that significant when it comes to either an H or X pipe. You will be both fine and happy with the H pipe, and maybe have a little more money in your pocket.

i appreciate you insight. the h pipe works fine and it does equalize the pressure, but the x-pipe has a few benefits over the h pipe. for one it is designed not to inhibit the flow while equalizing the pressure. placing the x-pipe in the correct location (ie. where the exhaust gases begin to slow and the exhuast pressure begins to drop) will enhance the breathing capabilities of the engine. its complicated to explain, but you have to understand thermal and fluid dynamics.
you are right the gains from doing this will appear insignificant during average city driving. however, this truck is my only vehicle and i put about 600 highway miles a week on it. i am in search of every last bit of fuel milage i can scrounge. this (in combination with headers) should up my highway milage at least by 2 mpg. it already gets 18 mpg highway with a new jasper 350, mild cam, 3-speed, holley 600, and a trashed exhaust system. |

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd?Also is it true that an H pipe wile make your vehicle sound better(louder)?

An X-pipe makes the exhaust sound smoother and less burbly. It causes each muffler to see pulses from all 8 cylinders instead of just 4 (that aren't firing evenly), and a sound with more pulses is easier to quiet. Seems to me the shorter the crossover on an H-type system, the closer to the X-type sound comes out.

i have never ran one on a truck yet.....yet........but have on my race cars...both dirt and asphalt...they deffinatly make one sound better....and i think add a lil bottom end power...least on the asphalt car it did ....hard to tell on a dirt car

I've got one on my truck and really balanced out the cam being lopey. You can still hear it but not as defined as before.

I recently bought the Summit Racing x-pipe kit. I've been researching where to locate the x-pipe, everything I've read seems to point to the crayon method and locating the x where the crayon stops melting. Ok - that sounds good, but on my longbed, that point is right in front of my current muffler location which is just in front of the rear axle. Summits instructions have the kit installed just at the header collector. I want to make sure before I start hacking my pipes...
Any thoughts?

x pipe: loud high pitch raspy
h pipe: loud deep tone (sounds alot better IMO) nerver heard that an x would give you better gas mileage though...

I read an article on them some time back, it seemed that the colser to the header, the better. I remember thinking I didn't really have room to put it in the optimal position. I didn't want it under my transmission pan for obvious reasons. I believe they do help with exhaust scavaging and also that an x pipe will allow a smoother transitions from one side to the other, rather than 90 degree turns for an H pipe.

I had an entire exhaust put on my truck this past summer. the x pipe is located just aft of the tranny tail shaft.
Rasphy sound NO WAY. It has a nice deep mellow tone. I'm running magnaflows with 2.5 stainless tubing coming out of stock rams horn manifolds. I noyiced a slight increse in gas milage (@ 2 to 3 mpg) and a large increase in performance. I'm extraemly glad i chose the x pipe over the H pipe. From what I've read the x pipe help scavange the exhaust better than an h pipe. The h pipe just more or less just equalizes the pressures between the two sides helping the sound better with the off phase cylinder firing. Whereas the x pipe actually uses an venturi type effect to help scavange (suck out) the exhaust gasses from the oppisite side.

kbs71 - thanks for that info, it helps clear things up for me considering i'm facing the same job. Can you take some pictures of your set-up and can you give us more details including cost or materials, install? Magnaflow part numbers? I'm leaning in the same direction of yours with the exception of headers instead of Rams.

Maybe put it where you can still remove the tranny easily? Other wise you will be taking your exhaust apart to get the tranny out.
