Axle questions

Is my front axle (D44) a closed knuckle, or open? It has the balls on the end of the axle that the brake drums sit on, not the U-joints if that helps. Will drum brakes swap from a closed knuckle to an open knuckle axle or vise-versa?

Will my rear drum brakes bolt on to a Dana 60 form a F#rd truck, or are they different?

Re: Axle questions

Sounds like you have a closed knuckle front. Not sure on the drums. I'm thinking they wont, Ferd used bigger hubs, and GM wheels won't always go on.....

Re: Axle questions

your rear is an eaton, I agree, I don't think the drums will go onto a ford d60

Re: Axle questions

You sure about my rear end being an Eaton? It looks like a Dana to me, and the trucks all original.

Re: Axle questions

If it's a GMC then it would be the Dana 60, Chevy uses the Eaton. Either way I don't they will work.

Re: Axle questions

I just purchased the exact truck you have as a parts truck for my '69.
Your truck should have the closed knuckle d44 front and full floater d60 rear as mine does. Good luck working on your truck.

Re: Axle questions

My '69 was exactly the same as your '68 when I bought it 6 years ago, plow and all. It was all original with very little rust. Then the V-6 died at 100,000 miles. I have since put in the 350 and changed the gears. I do not drive mine in the winter anymore. I consider these GMC's to be rare. I have never seen another one in my area and get many offers to buy mine. I was shocked when I found the '68 at a local repair shop in the back lot. I got it for $500. It will be my parts truck for my '69 since the running gear is all the same. I love the old GMC 4x4's. It is good to see another one kickin' around.
