Door hinges

I just got some new pins and bushings to replace the worn out ones currently on the hinges in my 71. I put the first pin in and it is about 1/2 inch longer than the old one that came out. I looked at the rest of the pins and they're all the same length. Has anybody ever had this problem before and if so will the pins still work? I'm thinking they will but it just looks kind of tacky.

Re: Door hinges

Cut 'em off with a whizz wheel (they should be hardened steel) before installing the rest.

Re: Door hinges

Is that what you did on yours? or is that what you're recomending? If you cut them off before you put them in you loose the tapered portion of the pin which might give you fits when going to install them.

Re: Door hinges

My set came that way also and I don't know why, they were from Chevy Duty if it matters, maybe they are all that way, don't know. Anyway we were able to cut it off with a regular hacksaw and then use a bench grinder to smooth up the end and put a taper back on. Not a show stopper, but turns a simple project into a slightly longer project, but don't all truck projects go that way ???

Re: Door hinges

The pins fit a variety of truck models. They just made them for the largest size hinge. I put mine in, then used a cutoff wheel to shorten them.

Re: Door hinges

Like Bill said, if you cut them after the hinges are assembled, the tapered tip is inmaterial. That's how I do mine.

Re: Door hinges

I just did mine this past weekend. Used an air cutoff tool to take the extra length off. The pin kits I bought had nylon bushings....I went to NAPA and got the bronze bushings. WHAT a difference it makes to have new bushings and pins in my doors! It is really amazing.

Since I had more than one truck to replace the pins on, I bought a door removal and installation tool from Harbor Freight. This tool is only available from the online store. $79.99....best money I've spent in a while. I holds pretty much any type of door. Any board members that are close by and want to borrow it...let me know!

Re: Door hinges

sweet. Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll go ahead and cut em down then. I just didn't know if they all came like that or I had gotten the wrong ones by chance.

Re: Door hinges

Like Green Machine said... cut to length with a cut-off wheel and then taper with a bench grinder. Gives you a tapered pin just like stock.
