Gage Cluster Interchange
I scored a reasonably priced tach cluster for my 86. The cluster itself is for an older truck since it has a mechanical oil pressure gage, voltmeter, and 100 mph speedometer. I also recently scored an 81-87 tach that works.
My plan was to use the 81-87 tach, my 86 speedo, and an 80 psi mechanical pressure gage I have in the older cluster. That would give me a cluster that has matching graphics and an oil pressure gage that doesn't peg. Would this combination work? I know the speedos will interchange and I assume the tachs would also. I also assumed that if I remove the sender for the electric pressure gage that the wiring to the gage won't matter. |

Re: Gage Cluster Interchange
It's possible to mix and match speedos, tachs, and other gauges but you MUST use the correct printed circuit. Your '86 will require a '78 or newer printed circuit. If you use the '73-'75 printed circuit it will result in an instant fire. With the '76-'77 printed circuit you'll have a 50% chance of a fire and a 100% chance that it won't.
