Finally finished box wood floor today!
Just finished counter sinking mounting bolts and offset washers.Was dissappointed with GMC pauls box wood info for board cutting info as it should be a little wider boards but I was able to space out enough to cover.Not his fault as I should have just measured for myself.Anyway here it is.

Looks great! Thanks for the info on the measurements, I was planning to use them. What did the wood cost you? Any tips?

Bed wood looks good. Glad you were able to space them out. Actually, most of the info on GMCPaul's site came from Jeff Nelson's web site.

If you would measure and give me the correct dimensions, I would work up some drawings and post them on my web site for those doing this in the future. That wood's too expensive to mess up with bad instructions.

Solver, the bed looks great. I need to get with you about the hole locations and the dimensions. About to do the same thing. My bed wood wasn't pre-drilled. Having tough time firguring it out.

I know it's oak but do you know what kind of oak ? and where did you get it ?

Beautiful job....makes me want to do a wood bed...no matter what the cost or heartache...the best of both worlds for us old "wood butchers!"

Lookin real fine! I'm also interested in getting proper specs. I replaced the old pine about 5 years ago with 3/4" plywood. The stuff is still solid but I'd like to get it back the way it was. I'm planning on using Australian gumwood, I know, a bit pricey but it lasts 3X longer than any other wood you would care to name. A friend's bro-in-law imports wood so I figure I can get a good deal. The rest will involve making router and drill bits dull, lol.

I plan on just taking the factory boards out of the '68 and duplicating them. Measure it myself...

I suspect that those dimensions originally came from GM and that they were established to allow for bed manufacturing variances as well as wood movement with humidity changes--keep in mind that these beds are rained on many times in their lifetime! No surface treatment known to man will prevent wood moving as humidity changes--varnish certainly won't. Finally, oak was used in this case which is notorious for movement.
If someone really wants a nice job, he should measure his bed and adjust the board widths accordingly.

Super looking job Solver. Did you paint the strips or powder coate them? I've never gotten the boards out of the box to see if mine are drilled or not. The old ones are good enough for patterns though.
