And so it begins...
I just picked up my very first project vehicle, a '70 swb fleetside courtesy of Djracer and I figured the best place for me to start is at the bottom. I hope to have the chassis on jackstands and ready to be worked on this weekend. How should I go about cleaning, de-rusting and painting the frame and rear end? I did a cursory search in a few forums but found nothing definitive. Hartrod has already dropped some knowledge and some nice parts on me but I need more, more i tell you MORE! Any advice on procedures, brands or tool selection would be most helpful. Up until the wife and I moved a year ago I have not had a garage so my selection of tools is almost nonexistant but with your guidance that will change. Thanks in advance!

Re: And so it begins...
Clean the frame - cheap dollar store brand oven cleaner followed by a good pressure wash. Car wash substitutes for having your own pressure washer.
Derust - wire brush cup on a side grinder. Eats rust for breakfast, will also eat SKIN for desert! No loose clothing and weargloves and eye protection, the wires come out ocassionally going about 300 ft per second. ouch! Paint - por15 on the new project. Good luck Last edited by TugOwar; 06-13-2006 at 07:18 PM. |

Have it sandblasted. costs about 80 for a frame here. Well worth it.

sand blasting is the way to go. I'm getting mine done and powdercoated for less than 250.00
