When on a grade gas is inconsistant-

Hey guys,

I'm a regular in the 69-72 Blazer section. But I also own a 74' 3/4ton long bed 4x4. Standard stuff ya know 350/350 with a 205 and 14bolt. This is my weekend warrior Home Depot/Dump run truck.

A few weeks back I parked on a hill in my back lot (front bumper high). The thing wouldn't start. Put in a new fuel pump (hack saw blade technique is sweeeet) and it still wouldn't start.

My friend who's a killer mechanic pulled the fuel line leading to the pump, no gas! He blew into it and cleared the line. Possibly a blockage. Either way it started up and no problems. I probably didn't have a bad fuel pump.

Just yesterday I parked in the same spot to load up some junk. The engine started sputtering. This is a spot that requires 4-low to pop out of. On a number of attempts to pop out of the spot the engine would almost die from lack of fuel???

What gives?

I have an Edelbrock Carb. The engine has never not ran except for the fuel problems a few weeks back. It's a solid motor. Is it possible my carb needs to be rebuilt?

Did you check the fuel filter? If the line was cleared, he probably blew the gunk away and it's probably back where it was before, check the filter and maybe see if you can drain the tank? Put ya a panty hoe over a bucket and pour back in?? And please explain this hacksaw blade technique to me, never heard of it.

perhaps your float could be stuck? allowing fuel to spill over and flood your truck while on the incline.. certainly wouldnt hurt to take it apart and clean it, and freshen it up.

Regarding the hack saw blad trick:

When installing a new fuel pump you have that rod that is in the block-

In order to properly install the new pump the rod must be held back in order to allow the pump lever to be inserted into the block-

One techinque is to use a long bolt that runs from the front of the block to into the block and then it ultimately pushes up against that rod and provides just enough tension to hold that rod in place. You then bolt up the pump and loosen the bolt and the rod "falls" into place.

Another technique I found on this board was to take a hack saw blade and put lets say a 45dedgree angle on the bottom 4". This allows you to use the long part of the blade as a handle. The angled portion (4" bent section) is used to push the end of the rod back into the block. The blade is flat so while your left hand is holding the hacksaw blade that is holding back the rod, you push the pump in place (with your right hand) and release the blade, thus releasing the rod. Did that make sense???

I will try the fuel filter. It a 74 after all with dual tanks and I'm sure there is some crud.

If you have more ideas let me know. Remember it runs like a champ when level.

I use wheel bearing grease on the rod to hold it in place long enough to get the pump bolted in.

Vasoline works good too and as far as your fuel issue goes, how much gas is in the tank when you park like that?
Depending on where the pickup is in the tank it could be not in the gas when on that steep incline.
