Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

She wants to drive the blazer but I have no dash lights, no turn signal light, no lights at all on the dash!!! I can tear apart about anything but putting back together is a different thing to me. Blazerman rebuilt this speed warning/tach cluster for me and I put it on and the lights will not come on. I know its not what he did but what I'm not doing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Randy

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

I had a similar situation with my '67 and everyone was telling me it was the turn signal switch. Then I heard it was the ground for the tail lights. Well, I tried everything and it turned out to be the fuse panel. The panel's terminals were corroded. I pulled everything out and sanded down all the terminals and put everything back together. Problem solved.

My panel lights didnt work on my truck & I had to add a ground strap from the back of the cluster to a bolt on the dash frame.

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

ok, i just HAD to ask. Just seems odd being that the turn signal indicators aren't working either.
Does the fuel guage read somewhat acurate... and does it do anything goofey when you turn on the lights or blinkers?

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

pull it all out, make sure all the lights are still good, not burn out. look for burns on the board. check the body ground to the frame (pass side)
(just fixed my problem too, it was body ground and light switch combination of problems....

Check that brown wire,as 68c15 suggested.Since you don`t have the dome light,either.

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

OK, I had about a half hour this afternoon. Pulled it back out put in new bulbs, never seen a brown wire for it. Anyway gas gauge, oil pressure lights work, turn signal lights both work but the right one stays on all the time but dimmer. High beam indicator works, but nothing on the left side works, speedo, battery, heat gauge lights do not work. My tilt indicator light works on the column. Basically everything on the left side is not working, Just the high beam indicator is all, any ideas. Thanks Randy

I once read (on this board) that a bad ground at a taillamp (or maybe it was a corner marker) can cause this. Mine sometimes does this in wet weather, IIRC the problem lamp will not be lit if this occurs.

Possibly you have more than one electrical problem?

With the left side of the dash bad, maybe Luv's 2nd ground is the key....

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

I checked and my right front side marker only works with the blinker, right front bumper light only works with lights on, no blinker. I did get the top off and somewhat washed for her Just had the tranny rebuilt so she is ready to go once I get these dang lights figured out

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

It's sounding like a bad printed circuit to me... take a pencil with eraser, and rub the contacts where the lights plug in. Also, as you twist in the light plug, look at the tabs, and make sure they are making contact. There is only one wire in teh harness that plugs into the panel, that powers all 4 guage lights. We know the ground is good to the instement panel, becouse the other lights all work fine. However, the circuit board on tehback can have it's own issues. Trace the 'lines' that act as wires, and look for cuts/breaks/ or burns... all 3 are not uncommon. This can also be on either side, power, or ground.
The turn signal indicator that is 1/2 lit, that indicates either a bad ground, or a burned out bulb, which, you said is in fact the case. Side markers won't do it, but the parking lights up front, or tail lights, will do it. I say replace all 4 1157 bulbs, or a 2057 would have brighter blinkers, but slightly dimmer running lights.
As for letting the little lady cruise... it's daylight... let her take it down the road. Make sure the brake lights work... no one uses turn signals anyways... she can act like the normal idiot for now untill you get it sorted. Heck, send her to the parts store to get 4 bulbs.
And, on a side note... dude, that is a kick ass lookin blazer.

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

Randy, if the dash cluster has the original printed circuit, it can have a break on any one of the strips and it will drive you nuts. As Andy suggests, make sure the contact points are clean and try a replug. There are a few ground points on the printed circuit--that also need to be clean. With a wiring diagram and a simple meter, you can trouble shoot most wiring issues pretty easy.

If you do find a break, they can usually be repaired. Lay a small piece of wire across the break (like a bridge), and solder it on each end.

Re: Help wife is PO'd at me!!!!

If the Coil On the headlight switch that controls how dim or bright you want the dash lights is burnt out it might only work in one sport or not at all.

the headlight knob isnt rotated all the way to the right is it?
