My holiday weekend

Heres a couple of pics of how my weekend went. A drunk driver side-swiped my Longhorn parked in front of my house. Believe it or not, he came back about 10 minutes later and HAD INSURANCE. I about fell over. So now the fight with insurance company begins. I'm sure they will want to total her and try to give me $500. At which point they will be given specific instructions as to where they can place that offer.
I may be parting her out soon so get in touch with me if you want anything.

Re: My holliday weekend

I hope you called the police. If he was drunk, you wouldn't have as much of a fight with his insurance company claiming it wasn't his fault. Also, you'd help get a loser off the road before he kills someone.

Re: My holliday weekend

The damage doesn't appear to be bad at all.... you'd be parting it because of this? Looks like it was a nice truck

Re: My holliday weekend

my friends saturn was totaled when a van ht her like that. it's made of plastic and the only surviving parts were the metal hood and trunk lid... and the other side of the car. the front was damaged by hitting a brick mailbox on the curb, and it got pushed from the rear and side. Seeing her car like it was gave me nightmares about my truck for nights.

Is there more hidden damage? It sure does not look bad enough to part out.

Re: My holliday weekend

I just went through the ins claim process on my 72. In my experience, it really wasn't that bad, hope you have good luck also. The thing I did was meet with the person that looked at my truck (I told my wife I wanted to be there) and I went over everything I had done to the truck. I assume that I know more about these trucks than the average insurance person, so I pointed out the cheyenne package, holes for headliner trim, a/c cab, tilt, underbed gas tank, ps, pb, sway bars, etc. Also receipts are great to document what work has been done.

I will tell you I settled with the ins company on their first offer. I also requested loss of use as my truck was undriveable. They agreed to $25.00 per day from the day of loss until they offered settlement. Maybe I had a good adjuster, but I believe it is because I was able to document that I had a good truck with desirable options. One other thing, have the person that inspects it take pictures of everything, options, anything that adds value.

Good luck and let me know if I can answer any questions.

Re: My holliday weekend

OregonLonghorn,
I have a good driver side off my old bed I am going to get rid of. You deside to redo the truck and you come and get the bed side, You can have it. Don't worry, I still have to get the old bed off and start seperating it. That will take a while but you are more then welcome to it. I would love to see you save your truck. Good luck and I hope you get lucky with the claim.
Respectfully
Billy

Re: My holliday weekend

I have a complete perfect, rust free, 1972 Longhorn bed and frame...disc brakes, sway bar and the works! We need to get together and make a whole truck. The wood in my bed is excellent as well.

Re: My holliday weekend

Thanks for all your support fellas. I did talk to the claims adjuster the next day and like rauto13 explained all about the truck and that there were only around 1400 made in '71. I mailed her over 5k in receipts today. We'll see. I'm assuming totaled due to the year and the pic really doesn't do justice to the damage. Should hear back next week. Stllookin, Kent isn't that far away, I can get a flatbed trailer and put her behind my Duramax!

Re: My holliday weekend

Man that sucks! Don't give up if they tell you it's totaled. They tried to pull that BS with me when my truck was rear-ended(also parked in the street). The car that hit it trashed the rear bumper, messed up the lower bed molding that looked almost new, dented the bed right under the driver side taillight, and messed up the alignment of the drivers door. Hell they hit it so hard that the battery on the truck fell down under the heater box, and I had the battery tray clamp tightened down too! The other company's first settlement was complete BS, their second was considerably higher(since our lawyer called 'em) so we took that one. Receipts were sent to the other company that came to about $2,700 and the truck just had new tires, so that also helped out.

Re: My holiday weekend

I do appraisals on all types of vehicles for our one and only government insurance carrier ( it overall works great for us here in Saskatchewan) in our Province and with the fact being your truck was parked so the accident was no fault of yours that should give you strength in the settlement negotiations and if you have documention for all the things you have done to the truck and better yet some comparables of what trucks like yours have recently sold for, although in the case of a longhorn it may be difficult to find one that has recently sold, that should help. I guess you have to ask yourself too. do you want it fixed or take a cash settlement and the salvage.

I have a line on an original owner dark green 72 longhorn, a big block no a/c truck with a wooden floor ( did all longhorns have wood floors? I remember the owner having this truck in the mid 70's) with 56,000 miles and I'm supposed to go see it in a couple of weeks. The origianal owner passed away 18 months ago and his widow is selling the truck through his son. The asking price is 12,500CDN which I think is way high. I'll post the pics after I see it. Its parked underground at the widows condo complex right now.

Re: My holiday weekend

Already Gone...that sounds a bit high but it may be worth it if it has been parked inside and is an all orginial unmolested truck. All Longhorns had wooden beds. I have seen some high asking prices and some nice trucks on ebay.

Oregon Longhorn keep us posted on the progress

I dont think the truck has been inside all its life. I know the wood floor needs to be redone but I think the body is pretty solid. The original owner had a Texaco Station in the 70's and I sold him parts then. I remember seeing the truck with a 10 foot slide in camper on it and he pulled a boat at the same time. I'd like to buy it for 5,000 but think its worth 7000 to 7500..

Re: My holiday weekend

When my 68 got hit, I had about the same body damage as yours. I didn't know the frame was bent until later, after the disassembly began.

The claims adjuster first came back at about $700! Told him I don't think so! His estimate was based on repairing all the panels, putting a new skin on the door, having the bumper straightened, yada yada. Explained to him that this was a rust and bondo free 68, a classic truck. No way in he!! I was going to allow some hack shop to mud the fender and bed. By the time I was done with him, I had a check for around $2677!

Hello, Goodmark?
