Got the serpentine belt system done...almost

Well, it's all bolted up and almost ready to go. For once I thought I did the right thing and bought this alternator harness to plug right into the alt wire and then the alt. But of course the plug doesn't fit, but other than that she's done. I also have to find a straight water outlet so the upper hose can go back on.

I also installed the Taurus electric fan that I got at the junkyard. Actually, Igotachevyor2 came over and helped wire up the fan and the alt. We never plugged the alt into the plug to see if it fit. I just ASSumed it did when I bought it. Thanks to him for coming over and helping with this ordeal.

I didn't need to change power steering pumps some guys advised earlier. Of course I wasted money buying one at the junkyard and getting home and realizing that it was the same.

I also have to go get another gear box, cause mine leaks. other than that she's almost ready for the Athens, AL Car Show.

Here's a couple of pics that I took of it.

I'm also curious as to the benefit of this setup. You have a serious KINK in that fuel line!. Does that cause any problems?. Cool looking truck you got!

Good eye c10crazy spotting that gas line kink when most are looking at the belts and pulleys. Try to take care of that yellow69 so if you are out some night with the cops in hot pursuit you won't run the carb out of gas. What this note is really about is when you get this belt thing resolved and gas line repaired please get all your tools cleaned up and packed in the tool box and put a lock on it. Then send me the key so you can't go out and get in another mess. You have worse luck than anyone I know when it comes to your truck. How's the new job coming. I am still off and don't know when I'll get to go back if ever. Last three evaluations have come back the same thing with no improvement. Starting to worry me a little. Have a good day and hope to see you folks the 22ed. later.

Re: Got the serpentine belt system done...almost

my serpentine setup has the alternator on the passenger side but the ac compressor is still in the way of the upper hose on the driver side. i used a normal t-stat housing and an upper hose for a truck with a/c. i got the hose for a 77 chevy which is the year my wrecker is but the same hose should work for you too. you definately need to fix that fuel line. that engine is going to starve for fuel. which will cause it to ping and run a little hotter

Yeah, I know about the fuel line. I bent it a little when I was moving it over to get out of the way of the A/C bracket. Going to the junkyard tomorrow. I'll look for one that it already bent. If not I'll get a new line, I just hate bending those lines.

Thanks for the compliments and the one disappointment

If you end up getting new line I have a tubing bender and the coiled sleeves that help keep them from flatting out. Let me know and I'll send them with one of McCartney's Nashville drivers and you can meet him at one of his stops and get it. I don't see me needing it any time soon.

It came from a 4.3 motor. Kind of a bastard, there were several 4.3's that donated to it.

Re: Got the serpentine belt system done...almost

For those of you that asked, the reason for the swap is to get a cleaner look (to me) with a modern hi-po alternator and the convienence of the serp belt over having 3 belts to change. Changing belts is a lot eaiser also.

They are easy to find in the yard. any of the 88-94 model GM trucks with a 4.3 or V8 will work. Mine also came off a 4.3 and I got everyhting for right at $100. Mine also included two good pwr steering pumps.

Good luck with the wire hook up Brian. Keep notes, cuz I'll be doing the wiring on mine before long.

I'd opt for the 92+ (or is it 91 and up, I can't remember) system as it is the aluminum one piece deal. The 88 brackets are steal and ugly IMO.

BTW Yello69, where did you get the pulley that goes in place of the AC unit?

I would just run a piece of braided line and be done with the hard line.

If you look at the link in my alt post it's the black end that goes into the alt. It's rectangular not oblong like my alt is. I don't know if Advance sells one that is oblong.

A+ on the post, and the work. I have been trolling around for some ideas on how to cut the cost of this mod. This will work great with the supercharger set up I am going to use!!

Re: Got the serpentine belt system done...almost

I've always had bad luck with the serpentine setup on an 88 silverado. The bearings i'm guessing on the tension pulley would go bad often and squeak like hell. Good thing they came with a lifetime warranty. The one from napa lasted a bit longer. Also had a problem where the belt would keep getting thrown off even though everything was lined up straight. Hope you have better luck with your serpentine setup.
