Dismantling bed.
What kind of tool is needed to cut through the welds holding the bedsides (Fleetside) to the rear cross sill. Is this the only place that there is welds? The front bed panel is just bolted on right?

A grinder or cut off wheel works great. That is the only place that the bed is welded.

The spot welds can be "drilled out" with a spot weld cutter, available at your local parts store. Just drill through the top panel, not all the way through, to loosen the panel. At least this is what you do on most of the body panels.

You wouldn't be able to drill those welds. Find a cutoff wheel/grinding disc or use a file since they are on an inside 90 degree corner. They will be the only welds unless a previous owner fancied himself a welder. The only other welds are the bed cross beam supports. They will be spot welded to the floor on metal floors.

I ground off the welds on the top of the cross sill, but the bedsides still won't move. I think I see welds on the back vertical part of the rear sill, but I don't want to grind a weld that I don't need to. I also crawled under the rear of my truck and there looks like there are two bolts on each side hold the bedsides. Are there also bolts holding the bedside to the rear cross sill?

Inside the cross sill, there are two bolts on each side.

Ok! I cut the welds on the rear cross sill, removed the bolts from the inner bottom of the rear cross sill.
What is the next step? It is a wood floor fleetside bed, but the wood is mostly gone. To remove the bedsides do I have to just remove the front panel now, or do I have to remove all of the bolts in the angle strip? Is the bedside bolted to the cross sills? Is the best way to remove the rusted bolts is to use a sawzall? Dano

To anyone else doing this...
I found out that there are four bolts on each rear side of the box that bolt to the rear sill that need to be removed. Why did Chevy weld the box to the rear sill, when there are four bolts holding it on? There was also two bolts, on each lower rear inner wheel well that is connected to one of the bed cross sills, that need to be removed. The support brace bolt has to be removed. All of the bedsides bolts that are bolted to cross sills have to be removed. All of the bolts holding the front bed panel have to be removed. When you have removed all of these bolts the bedsides pretty much fall off. I was lucky in that most of the bedwood was rotted so I just tore out the remaining wood. This made removing bolts easier. I had a h&!! of a time removing the floor board bolts, pretty much had to use a bolt cutter, sawzall, or cutting wheel. I also noticed that there was some sort of tar paper that was below the bed wood. Was this used on all wood beds to protect the bottom of the wood? Thanx Dano
