Max Output?

I am about to get my engine back from the shop from getting a stock rebuild. It's a 350 block with a mild rebuild meaning it should only be to factory specs...i think. What kinda hp can I expect out of this, I understsand its contingent upon other parts but what is the max for the engine itself? I was asking and my friends say its about 225, and i just wanted to make sure. I might pic a different tranny if it is significantly higher.

Re: Max Output?

If it is strickly factory, your looking more like 180hp in my opinion of "stock".

GM's basic stock crate engine is rated at 260hp.

Re: Max Output?

whoa. These are 2 COMPLETELy different responses. One says far less than I expected and one says far more. What are you all basing your statements on? 180 would make me sad. 260 would make me happier.

Re: Max Output?

I'm basing mine off the fact that my GM Goodwrench crate motor is rated at 260hp. Not saying yours will make that much, but for stock HP numbers, that is where I am drawing my comparison.

FWIW, my 70 K10 was rated at 255hp.

Re: Max Output?

I forgot to mention that it Was a 305 and I had him convert it into a 350, although that doesnt really matter does it?

Re: Max Output?

Did he use a different block? The 305 bore is 3.74", while a 350 is 4". .260" is a lot to bore, and I don't think it could be done. Stroke is the same, so maybe he used a 350 block? Heads would make a difference too..... I'll go with a range of 200 - 250.

Re: Max Output?

cr, heads and cam will affect the power output but i would agree with 200-250 is in the ballpark

Re: Max Output?

Yeah I had to pay for a core because he said you couldnt bore it that big without breakin stuff. So 200-250 sounds good. Does adding better parts after the engine add hp or is that the most it will have period? For example headers are supposed to add hp. If my max engine is like 225 can the headers add to that or do they just liberate more of the max?

Re: Max Output?

Headers, heads, cam, carb, intake...lots of hp adders but you need a plan 'cuz some combos will actually hurt your hp.

Re: Max Output?

thanks man. Any tips or combos to avoid? I don't really have anything planned for it yet. I have my engine and am ordering a 700R4 tranny. I will include lock up and a stage 2 shift kit. www.maddogtransmissions.com imho this place is the best for trannys that i have seen. Then again i havnt seen many but yeah what other things should i plan on getting. This will hopefully get good nuff mileage with overdrive to be a daily driver...thinkin 17-20, so power kinda goes out the window with mileage. I know to get headers. I need to get a new carb and intake manifold. What else. I guess what I really need is to start making a list of parts that I need to buy to make my truck run, and then finding good ones.

Re: Max Output?

firs of all you have to figure out what you want out of your engine.your finial drive ratio will determine your cruise rpm. build your engine to perform well at the rpm's you plan on driving it an engine built to make power at 3500+rpm's will disapoint you if it will be run at 2000 rpm"s so you need a plan and pick your componites to match your use if you don't your performance will suffer

Re: Max Output?

Well I already had the engine rebuilt, and I hope i didn't make bad decisions back then. I will get the spec sheet and double check the engine specs and components and post them for some info/insight. I guess rpm and ration has to do with tranny too? I'm getting a 700R4 overdrive for it. Thats another thing can someone explain tranny lockup to me please? Theres an option for hydraulic lockup for like 130 more, and I dont even know what it is but it has been recomended by almost everyone I talk to, although I don't know what it does.

Re: Max Output?

Stock smallblock engines range from the 160 hp figure above to about 375.So it really depends on what engine you started with and the components listed above.I doubt your engine builder started with a 375 hp core so probably between 200-250.Headers,cam and intake will add some. They tend to add more or less depending on the combination. As stated above the best way to build power is to go for parts that work well together.
