Gas Tank Neck gasket
I need to replace the gasket around the gas tank neck, yes the tank is still in my cab, the last time this was done was when I did the rebuild and had the tank out of the cab. Is there a kind of easy way to replace this thing without removing the tank again?

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
Very good question.....I have to do mine tonight also...
I heard NOT to use vasoline as a lube, as it is a petrolumn base product that will deteriorate the rubber,. |

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
I understand, from commercials of course, that there are some "personal lubricants" on the market that are water based.

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
Thanks to all for your responses, going try some Armorall, and if that is a problem then some silicone grease. Will try and get some pix.

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
Never understood the big deal on replacing these. I just cut the old one out, clean the neck, then I use a light film of "Vasoline" on the neck of the tank and on the opening of in the cab. Putting light pressure on the rubber as you turn onto the neck. Slips right on every time. I've never had any problems using Vasoline. I just wipe off any excess after it's on.

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
I was told vasoline will shorten the life of the rubber.

There's a joke there somewhere. Almost too easy.

I've always used dish liquid and never had a problem.

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
Here is an update. The old one was hard to take out. But after cutting it in a couple of spots I was able to pull it through from inside the cab. To my surprise the neck of the gas tank is not centered in the hole. The new gasket does not slip in with any lubricant that I have tried, including dish soap, armorall and or silicone oil. If I new how to add pictures to my post I could show you what I am talking about. Anybody else run into this problem. I don' think removing the tank would make it easier, but I am willing to try anything at this point.

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
If you can get to the bolts that hold the tank in you can loosen them off a little and move the tank nozzle where you need it. Mine wasn't dead center in the hole but with a little pressure and Armor All it popped in place.

Re: Gas Tank Neck gasket
First of all it's not a gasket as I have been calling it, it's a grommit. eh!
Ran into another problem, there are two grommits that are used on these trucks, one is a 67-69, the other a 69-72. My original purchase turns out to be a 67-69 and the outside diameter is not big enough to fill the gap. I think if the neck were dead center it might work, but barely. So I have ordered the grommit for the 69-72. To loosen the gas tank seems simple enough, but I don't wan't to do that until I have the right grommit. So stay tuned.
