straight true duals

Hey guys, I need help with a headers decision. I'm pretty poor at the moment (just paid for all my classes ) and all I've got is about 150ish. In the future, I want to run true duals, just straight back, with no bends along the way. The headers I was looking at are P/N 500-69090 (or500-69092) on Jegs.com

Any suggestions, should this work out alright? And if you know of any better/under 150, let me know! Thanks,

put headers then some glasspacks with header flanges on them (purple ones i believe). note that that would have no backpressure and you'll feel it (lack of backpressure).

The purple ones are called Hornies. You need to save some money and get a good quality exhaust system done to get some performance along with a good sound. Don't just settle and waste your money on a quick system because it will bite you in the end. Just my .02 cents.

I agree. When I was young and broke I did a similar thing only planning to run it a short time. The exhaust dumped under the bed and in less than 2 years I had ruined my bedsides with rust. Save a little money then do it right.

FYI, I was just quoted $350 for duals to hook up to my current manifolds, If you installed the headers yourself your exhaust could be done for around $300 average I bet. That was a custom bent exhaust and not needing to remove anything from your current truck.

Oh, I thought that going this way was the best way - Ha, guess I was wrong. What should I go with then? LIke an X-pipe? I just know that the Y-pipe can't be all that great...

If money is a factor then wait.Because you will only get something you will hate later.

I have done a few different exhausts on different cars and trucks.

You do not have to have a dual exhaust in order to get good flow.A well put together 3 inch single will flow just as much as a dual 2.5 with a cross over.

As far as the tail pipe goes.I have never heard of a truck bed rusting out because of the exhaust breathing on it.Does not mean it did not happen though.

If you have the ability to clean and paint a set of used headers , I can drop some off at the same house that I dropped the coil springs off at . They are not Heddman but they are free ! They are just sitting around here and if you can use them , thats better than them sitting . If you want I will drop them the next time I am in Crockett . If you dont like them you can give them away or trash them . Frank

I can't swear that is what caused it to happen either. But I have owned over a hundred of these trucks(60's/80's I buy sell and trade as a sideline job) and never had one that I could remove the bedsides without any type of tools except this one 1982 C/20 that had my homemade exhaust system under it. The system was a set of headers and collectors, 2 Cherry Bomb glass packs, and an 8' section of exhaust pipe which I cut in half, 4 clamps and 2 universal hangers. It ended about 12/18 inches before the rear axle. I used this truck with a towbar and when I could borrow one, a trailer and I let it run/idle while hooking up or loading/unloading for A/C in the summer and heater in the winter. After about a year I noticed rust starting to make holes in the bedside. I first thought it was just the GM rust thing going on and didn't think much about it. Another year passed and one day the left bedside just started falling off as I was going down the road. I limped it on home and got a hold of it and finished removing it with very little effort. Went to passenger side and give it a yank and removed it also. One of my customers was a high school chemistry teacher came to pick up his car and of course ask me if I had lost my mind tearing up my truck in my front yard. I explained that the bed fell apart going down the road. He looked under the truck and saw my exhaust system and he set in to tell me about exhaust, condensation, and a lot of stuff I had never heard of before or since. But what he said made sense at the time so I believed him. So I no longer own the truck and the teacher is probably dead so believe it or not. But I have never ran another truck like that and I get exhaust problems fixed ASAP.

I had good luck with this kit on my 85 a few years back...It was cheap, easy to install, and fit perfect.

I did this (or similar) kit first on a '79 Suburban 4x4, then another one on a '81 GMC Jimmy 4x4. Both kits went on with no memorable issues. Just remember that they don't include mufflers so it will be about another $60 +/- to complete it. I bought the cheaper(est?) turbo muffler they offered and they had a good idle and lower RPM sound but as the RPM's went up they got a raspy sound more like a glass-pack/cherry-bomb.

On Summit they have a similar kit that is a Holley brand that is mandrel bent and aluminized. It is only about $20 more if you feel the need for mandrel bending. This kit gave me problems on my '87 swb but I was putting it on a 2wd with a manul tranny and manifolds. The thing that seemed to give me the most problem was the manual tranny X-member.

If some good hearted person is donating you a set of headers it sounds like you are almost ready to go.

Frank, you are awesome! Haha, yea, that would be great! Are they the stock ones or aftermarket of some sort? In fact, just about an hour ago, my family got back from Crockett, and I finally got to see them. I was getting on here to send you a thanks . That setup looks pretty nice - anyone know if they offer one that dumps straight back? I know LMC has some kinda kit that you can choose the stock exit (behind the wheels) or straight back. Not only do I like the look of the stock exit, but I had a tire blow out once, and the "shred" caught the stock exhaust and ripped it off at 60 mph. Don't look forward to that happening again...
