69 c10 starting problems

Hey all. Having some trouble starting my 69 truck. Has a 292 I6 engine. Last known start: UNKNOWN!

Replaced:
Engine Oil & filter
Distributor Cap and rotor
spark plugs and wires
battery cables

It does crank but does not start.

Starter seems good
Keep draining the battery though when cranking
there is fuel in the carb.

Thought I flooded it but took all the plugs out and did a crank over a couple times to get the fuel out.

Checked electrical and I am getting the right voltage through each connection


**the ignition is apart, so I am just bridging the ignition harness to try to start it. (reasoning is that I don't have a key for the truck and can't seem to get the ignition out of the dash)


Am I missing something else???

Can anyone help?

sounds like no spark...has to be no fuel or no fire...I would guess something with ignition...timing...?? Sorry not alot of help...

Ok...dumb questions....
Is the gas new? Or has it been in the truck for years?
Have you tried starting it using carb cleaner in the carb?
I am pretty new to "old engines" I had a problem with a fuel pump relay (but I don't think our trucks have them) if its bad would cause a pressure problem...

I am green, so if this is a stupid Idea, sorry.

so when you changed/checked the rotor did you change/check teh points too? I had this same problem on the interstate and it turned out my points had popped where you could not see it without pulling them all the way out.

Sounds like you may not have any spark, or your timing could be way off. Pull a spark and see if you have spark, if you have spark then I would check timing. Get #1 cylinder to TDC and check to see if the rotor is pointing at number 1 cylinder. If not then you need to adjust your timing

Okay, got #1 at TDC, rotor is pointing at number 1 on cap. The gas is new.


Now beside the crank, there is a plate with lines on it. Used for timing. Where should my crank timing line match up with the plate?

If you did flood it you should really pull all the plugs and dry them out or replace them. (pending on how bad it was flooded) Do like mentioned above, spray some carb cleaner in the carb while cranking and see if it fires or tries. If it does them you know that you are getting spark but no fuel, and if it doesn't try to fire you are not getting spark.

Try getting an ignition switch and just plug your harness into it.Then use the key to crank it.That way there should be no question that the wiring is connected in the correct order.Try priming the carb with carb cleaner or a very small amount of fuel.It may have a dried out accalerator pump.

Test the coil. These can go bad from time to time. Use starting fluid and see if it fires.

Okay, tested the coil, enough voltage there. Replaced the points today. I am pretty sure there is no spark. With a spark plug out attached to the wire, no spark when cranking it over.

I will pickup some carb cleaner tomorrow.

Already took the plugs out and cleaned them off.

The truck cranks over really good with the new battery. BUT does not start

Any other suggestions???

if your coil is outputting coreectly as you say and you hav no spark at the plug... I would look really close at the points.

Spark plug out attached to wire still won't spark if it isn't grounded, I would check the button of the dist cap that touches the rotor and see if it is ok.
I've got a bad new one before.

Okay picked up some starting fluid, No Help. Adjusted the points, No Help. Man this truck wants to start, but can't seem to get a spark. Could it be the condenser under the distributor cap??

Now when testing the coil, how many volts shoud be showing?

Would there be anything else that I am missing?

Are you sure that when you are bridging the ignition you are doing it right and you are getting fire to your points. The best way is to run a wire from your pos battery post to the pos terminal on the coil.

Umm let me clarify what I am doing. The ignition harness: I am using a wire and basically hot wiring the truck. Should I be putting a wire on the pos battery to the pos coil instead???

IIRC, You need to get 12 volts to TWO wires behind the ignition switch. One to the starter and one to the ignition. It sounds to me like all you are doing is putting 12 volts to the starter. Then when you let off the starter there is nothing "on".

Does that make sense?

Okay, update. Bought a new condenser... still no luck. Man loosing hope here. Could it be the coil? Can someone tell me how to test it.

to test spark correctly take a screw driver shove it in the boot and hold 1/8th of an inch to ground (not carb (fire)) the have someone crank the engine over you should see spark if not then you are not getting spark.

if your not getting spark make sure your coil had a good ground you can check your coil with a volt/ohm meter like picture below

A couple of people may have hit on your problem...get a new ignition switch and plug it in to the ignition harness (you can change it out with the one in the dash later)...I believe using a wire to jump the ignition at the harness can allow the engine to crank over and still not power the points/coil hence no spark. alblogg's suggestion will overcome this if it is the problem. I'm sure someone will chime in if this is not correct.

Stupid question. Did you adjust your points accordingly? I've come across a couple of people over time who didn't know that they need adjustment. They threw them in their classic cars, didn't set the gap, and wondered why the cars wouldn't run.

Yes that may be. All I am doing is using a piece of wire and putting one end into the red and one in the purple (I think those colors) Does anyone know what other color of wire needs 12V??

You are just jumping the starter solenoid circuit with the purple wire so it will crank. You need another wire to the ign circuit for it to start. A jumper from batt to + side of coil will work to start it but it will be full 12V instead of resisted power. You need to jump the wire going to coil circuit. Pink possibly?
