3 speed Saginaw 'Kaput'
I have a 67' LWB with a 283 and a Saginaw 3 speed on the column. The tranny is trashed and I was thinkin' about upgrading. Any suggestions? Will a Muncie or Saginaw 4 speed, floor shift, fit in my truck without modin' my driveshaft length? My recent engine rebuild doubled the horses and I want the tran to be able to withstand the punishment.

i have 68 that i changed out to a muncie. i only had to change 2 bolts on bottom of bellhousing to trans. nothing else. but i think the 67 bellhousing is differnent. i am sure somebody will jump in on that. 4 on the floor is the way to go. good luck. pkj

The only difference in the 67/68 bells are the center hole size, 68 up is 5 1/8" on the truck, & 67 on back is 4 11/16" (same as the car trans you will be installing)! you will need to bolt & nut the bottom 2 holes on the trans,as the truck bell does not have threadded holes in the bottom. The 4 spd saginaw is a direct bolt in replacement for the 3 spd that you are running, as well as the m20/21 muncie......altho some of the muncies have a 26 spline input shaft, vs the 10 spline in your truck, requiring a clutch disc swap. I have a replacement 3spd saginaw from a '69 (synchronized) that has been peacefully resting in my basement since I started my swap if you just end up replacing it. It was rebuilt a few months before the swap and is in exceptional shape. You'd probably want to pick it up though, because it ain't worth the shipping cost to get it up to ya.
Expect to pay at least $400 for a muncie 4spd. in good shape (I shopped around a lot thinking about the upgrade).

Thanks guys. After checking around I'm gonna rebuild the 3 sp Saginaw. Heard it wasn't too hard to do. Never done that before, so like the engine rebuild I did, it will be a learning experience. I think it can handle the extra horses. I do want to put a 3sp floor shifter in however.

Don't forget about the super t-10 4 speeds. Better ratios, and they were used in the 70's and 80's, so the stockpile is a little more fresh - not to mention cheaper because it isn't called a muncie.
