Check out my project
I have a 72 Lb with a 400 small block, I have discovered an oil leak in the intake manifold gasket. I was wondering how hard it would be to replace. I know my way around engines some but do not own a timing light or have ever messed around with the timing.
I am also in the process of taking the Bed off any suggestions on the best way to diconect the wiring for the tail lights ? thanks for the help this site is great, here are some pictures of my project (taken when I first got the truck I have since stripped it and am preparing for to paint) |

looks like you have a nice project there. The tail lights have one plug under the bed at the back of the frame. As far as the intake leak I would mark your intake & distributer & mark where your rotor is pointing. Should get you close. I would recomend finding a timing though

Distributor has to come out. Get a timing light, and check the timing on your engine currently. It's obviously not stock, so the stock timing value may not be accurate. Get the engine to top dead center, so that the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke, and then rip everything apart. Just don't turn that engine over until you get the distributor put back in.

As said, put the rotor close to where #1 is on the distributor cap (the rotor should be pointing dead straight ahead... Then, I would mark the base of the distributor and the intake with a pencil (so you can get the timing back to the way it was). Lastly, I'd take a picture, or make a good mental note as to exatly which way the rotor was pointing, then pull the distributor out.
As long as you get the rotor in the exact same spot as you took it out, and line up your marks between the base of the distributor, and the intake.... I don't see how you could do this in any more of a fool-proof way. Looks like a nice truck, by the way!! |

Thanks for all the help, I am going to a swap meet this weekend to look for some wheels and a hood so I probably wont get to work on the manifold gasket this weekend. I am not sure about the paint but do have the Green paint (guy gave it to me when I bought the truck) D M Manning your truck sure is making me lean in that direction sweet ride. Hope I can help you in the future
