wheels and rear end questions.

hey I was wondering if any of you could help me with some questions, first I was wondering why newer rims dont fit on the old trucks, i want to put 20's on but when i emailed american racing if they fit they said they wouldent, now i belive it has something to do with the wheel bearing and such? is there any way to fit that to fit newer rims on? I plan on putting on drop spindles and pulling the disc brakes out of a 72 truck. also what trucks had a stock posi rear end i could put into my truck or what do i look for when at the wreckers for rear ends pref. 373, my 411's are abit tough on the tires and gas :P

I have 20's on the back, also have 3.73 and posi... my truck is a 70 and the rearend was stock... look for a 12 bolt pattern for starters... at least thats what mine has. Heres a before pic....

thanks, now to put rims on the front what do i have to do since, ive been told they dont just bolt up onto it, thanks for the help

stock style rims generally wont fit for 2 reasons. 1- backspacing.. on the back for example the backspacing is so great that the tire hits the inner tub of the bed. and 2- the axle hub is a bigger diameter on the older trucks than it is on the newer trucks. to make the rim fit, youd have to mill out the hub hole in the newer rim. not really worth it IMO.

Not sure about American Racing wheels, but I had no problems on either end of the truck with my BONSPEEDS. I have 5in BS in front and 5.5in BS in rear. The only problem I encountered was with the center cap of the BONSPEED not seating flush once the wheel was on. It was such a simple fix, though. I simply bought a $40 grinder from Lowes and grinded the center hub down around its edges to decrease its overall diameter. If it was 2.5in in diameter to start, then it's now about 2.25 or less. Also couldn't run the stock grease cap. Get one that isn't round on the end or a short one. Beating it down with hammer didn't work. Remind me and maybe I can take pics by the weekend.

No problem on mine I run 20's with 5" backspacing all around and they fit fine. I have a 72 with the 12 bolt rearend.

I'm running a 20x10 Torq Thrust II out back (centered- 5" in, 5" out) with the factory 12 bolt and no problems.

I was looking at some 5 lug wheels off a 88-98 c1500. Will they fit or will I have to take some off?

I tried to install factory (15's)aluminum wheels from a '91 1/2 ton on my lowered '72 'burb, but they interfered with the caliper.
I'm not sure if the steel rims will work, but the aluminum wheels, as mentioned, didn't.

thanks for the help, just sounds like ill have to make some custom modifications, i wish i could just get some torq thrusters, but im running 6 bolts. ahah

They do make a 6 lug Torq-Thrust, but it is 6 spoke.

yeah, not as easy to find a used set, they used to make a nice set VI i belive but they stoped making them and went to a similar look but not as nice. iv been looking at the american racing rts wheels they seem to be some what affordable.

OK, I went through the same situation and here is what you need to do to run the newer style wheels if you want it done "right". The problem is the axle flange on the rear is a larger diameter than the new style wheels will allow. I pulled my axles out and took them to a machine shop and had them "turned" on a lathe to the proper hub bore diameter of my new wheels. This fixes the problem forever, and should you decide to ever switch wheels down the road, you won't have to go through the process again. It's not hard to pull the axles, and it only cost me $50 if I recall to have them turned. You could bore out the hub of the wheels, but why? First of all, if you ever want to rotate your wheels, you'll have to do it to ALL 4. That costs more. What if you want new wheels down the road? You gotta do it again. Makes sense to do the axles, not the wheels.

installing 20's on c-10 is not a problem. you just have to get a wheel with the correct backspacing. i have 20x8.5 Equus brand wheels on my 72. i had previously had those wheels mounted on my 99' yukun before i traded it. they fitted with no problems or mods. they ride and handle just like the factory wheels did.

Not always the case. The higher end wheels are usually "hubcentric" which means they have a specific hub bore size specific to a vehicle type. The wheels like you describe are most likely "lugcentric" (they are balanced by the lugs/studs of the vehicle and not the hub).

I've also run into this problem but I'm fairly sure MOST Boss wheels will fit. I was trying to fit a set of 20" Driv Reality and they wouldn't fit the back.
