Time to put 'er in gear? It's been 5 years . . .
Ok, there is a very remote chance that I will finish my brake-overhaul on saturday. If that happens, I will be VERY tempted to throw the ole' beast in gear and see if it moves (it hasn't moved for 5 years).
What, if anything, should I do with the transmission before I attempt a short drive forward? I know the truck was well-maintained up until the time it was parked in 1997, so the trans. fluid would not have been old at that time. I also know that the transmission worked without any trouble up until that time. I have never done any transmission work before, so rebuilding it would probably be out of the realm of possibility at this time. I really hope the board will suggest that I just drop it in gear and see what happens!! Oh, it's a '67 C10 with a 3 on the tree. Thanks for your suggestions! |

I would say,just check fluid level,then pull it through the gears a few time while shes warming up,& check for any leaks before you take off. Good luck.....69 longhorn.

Have faith man, let the clutch out slowly and smothly so it'll lightly rub the rust off instead of grind it into the clutch material.
5 years is Just a break. Giv it some fresh fluids and a tune up,(maybe tires too) and you could go for a long drive w/o problems IMO. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. I put a 3spd trans in the convertible that had been on a shelf for 10+ years, all I did was put new seals in it, filled it with oil and backed it out of the shed.

I have been gone a while and just checking in on the site and know this is old news but I bought a 69 sub that had been still since 92. Iput a fuel pump on it shot some starting fluid in it turned the ignition. The old starter grunted a few times and fired up my gosh you never seen the likes a smoke come out of a tail pipe. Dropped it in gear drove it out of the field (after we took the tires and had them aired up).My buddy followed me home and I drove real slow until I found out if the brakes were o.k. That was 5 months ago and been fixin' on it every day a little bit at a time. But boy are those 1/4 in bad shape. Good luck to ya!

Oh Yeah it kinda jumps and jiggles and shakes and wobbles when I let out on the clutch but hey it moving. I might would to if I sat that long.

Mine does that when ever it's in motoin. That reminds me...I need some front tires.

speaking of vehicles sitting around for awhile, my poor old cutlass convertible had been parked in a shed for 15 years, I aired the tires up, pulled it to my friends shop, put one of his batteries in it, filled with water and prestone, added 1 quart of oil(the engine already needed rebuilt), poured gas in the carb, hit the switch and she ran beautiful, a little smoke(skeeter killer) but circled the truck lot like she'd been driven everyday, except for the brake thing, but that's all new now, along with the engine. best free car I ever found!!!!
