Shifter Question
My truck's shifter is nearly impossible to move when it gets cold out. It's a column shift, and when it's warm out it pivots freely. When it's cold out you can't really move it at all. I thought it had something to do with the pin that holds the shifter in place, but that didn't seem to change anything. I don't know much about the internals of columns and was hoping someone could help me. Thanks!

What do you mean by "cold", 30-40deg? I had an old 3 speed whose linkage and internal column parts were covered in old nasty grease. If yours is the same, it might be gummed up on the moving parts, and when things warms up, the grease becomes thin enough to move freely. Just a thought

dave,I have had this problem before.I suggest the following.
(1) Put a quart of oil in the truck(Leave it in the bottle) (2) Get a pocketful of quarters (3) get a can of degreaser and one of WD-40 (4) Cruise down to the car wash (5) Cover the igbition system (6) Spray the column and shift levers down with degreaser (7) Wash the rest of the truck (8) now the degreaser has had time to work (9) Cleand the column and levers with the spray wand (10)Spray the shifter assembly with WD-40 (11)Now pour a little oil in the working areas of the shifter. (12) work the shifter thru the gears several times (13) Stop at the parts store on the way home and pick up new bushings for the lower end of the shifter arms (14) install the new bushings(make sure to lube them) You may need to repeat this every 2-3 years or more often depending on where you live and drive.

na, his is an automatic.
I fought with that crappy shifter and said screw it, I went with a van tilt which has a wonderfully more modern shifter set up. You can pull the steering wheel, the turn signal and then get to the shifter bell or what ever they call it... the part that rotates on the column, where the shifter arm is hooked with that pin that you replaced, and then clean everything, and coat it all with anti-seize compound. |

his signiture says powerglide...auto.
Personally, I have never seen one of these style collumns bind at the bottom (automatic) but every single one I have ever shifted.... to include 75 or so p/30 trucks we were rebuilding at work, was binding at the top. |
