Am I Screwed?
For some time my truck has been making a "knocking" noise. After some searching, I came to the conclusion that my flexplate may be cracked. (I had already looked at the bottom end to no avail) I got the first 4 bolts out without incident, and then these two hookers started to round off. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Take a big shop hammer and make sure you hit it flat head on. (don't try to knock the crank out of the block) That will serve two purposes, It will jar the threads loose and it will swell the head of the bolt so that the wrench might not slip. Make sure and use a 6 point socket or wrench on it that fits tight. Hope this helps as I would not drive back to where you live for the truck. Made it home with old blue at 10:30 pm.

I was using a six point socket, but the problem was that I didn't have a 14mm in a 1/2" drive. I used a reducer on the 1/2" ratchet to accept a 3/8" socket and was having trouble keeping it square on the bolt. That coupled with the fact that these bolts were severely overtightened led to the heads starting to round off. Originally I slid the trans. back away from the motor, but since I needed more room to work I had to pull the trans. Do you think I may be able to use your hammer/socket method and try an impact? Not sure if they would help or hinder? (BTW, it was a WHORE to get the trans. out with the truck on jackstands

Or go to Autozone....spend a few dollars and buy a stripped bolt removing tool. I used one a few years ago and it worked like a charm.

man those can be a pain in the rear i had to take a hammer and chisel to two bolts in the crank of one of my old 350s that held on the flexplate i'd try the impact because the jarring of it might help you if it rounds off anymore you're still ok just use the hammer and chisel like i did now remember your not tryin to chisel the bolt head off but just trying to break it loose hope i've been helpful

weld a deep nut to whats left of the bolt, the heat from welding will help if the bolt has loctite on it. we do it at work all the time on 3.0 nissan motors, they break exhaust manifold bolts flush with the head--aluminum head

I agree with the welding of a nut to the bolt. The heat will help you at this point.

I tried to use a "bolt removal" tool this morning. It was biting in to the bolt just fine, but I couldn't get the bolt to budge. I'm 6'2" and 200lbs. and was giving all the @ss I could muster. I don't have a welder and I'm not certain if I can get one to try the welded nut suggestions. I just recently tried to use a chisel, but that didn't work either. It did a good job of hosing one of the bolts. I soaked them with PB Blaster before I started but that obviously didn't have much affect. I'm at a loss.

Use the propane torch as suggested. If the bolts were loctited, the heat will cause the loctite to release. It will also help to break the bolts loose. Hold the flame on the head of the bolt for a good long while. A propane torch does'nt get super hot so it won't hurt anything. You may want to replace the rear main seal just as a precaution though.

I got the Irwin Bolt-Grip sockets. They work so damn good, it's funny. I spent about $45 for the full set, but they are SAE/Metric, so you only need the set.

Go to your local store and get one of those "Gator Grip" sockets. Hell, looks like they even sell them at Walgreens:

Another trick is to use a (box end wrench) instead of a socket. Get a 6 sided wrench drive it on the head of the bolt, then while applying pressure to hold the wrench on the bolt use a hammer to tap the wrench in the loosen direction. This will act as an impact and the angle is less for wobble over.

Go to auto zone and buy a set of stripped bolt removers . I bought a set and they work great. The hammer method is the right idea.

Is this motor out of the vehicle? If so, put it in the back of a truck and take it to a shop that has the welder and do it there.

The engine is still installed. I have the trans. pulled out (the truck is on jack stands) so my work space is limited.

Did you heat the flange up when you used the bolt removal tool? You might want to go in there with a propane torch and heat up the flange around the bolts then try the removal tool again.

In my case, I normally switch from serious English words to Japanese or Russian words. The Russian sounds more forceful. My dad always said you have to know how to talk to some cars.
GOOD LUCK with it I ended up with one that stubborn many mons ago and didn't have a welder, so I cut the bolt head off, then slowily drilled it out unutl there wasn't must bolt left, then used a stud remover.

That's alot of good ideas. Here is one that might work. A long six point box end wrench hammered on to the bolt head with the end of the wrench wrapped in a rag where your hand is going to hold it and at the same time use a propane torch with map gas and heat the bolt while applying pressure. Just a thought.
