another dumb idea?
my 68 has the side makers that are just reflectors not lights. i am considering using the front openings to feed a dual snorkel air cleaner. do you think the 2 1/2 x 5 1/4 openings are large enough to feed a 750 cfm carb? i will make my own bezels and try to work the molds so they direct air stream in. i worry that they may allow the airstream to suck air away from the engine. thanks, pkj

Re: another dumb idea?
i think you'd get little or no ramair flow effect from the side of the fender

Re: another dumb idea?
With air rushing past the side you'd probably get a vacume effect. But if you got a couple of those scoopy things like the covers for a dryer vent from a house and duct taped them on ....................

Re: another dumb idea?
Just use your marker lights in your grille.

Re: another dumb idea?
you are right, there would be no ram air effect, but it would be fresh air instead of hot engine air. i want to keep front lights functioning. pkj

Re: another dumb idea?
nope, not a cowl induction hood.... a true cowl intake system. I'm searching for an online link or photos... NASCAR used it back in the day, it actually works better than most of the BS cold air kits on the market today.
If anyone knows what I'm talkin about and has a photo or link, feel free to jump in. There was a company that used to advertise in the back of Hot Rod with this kind of product... |

Re: another dumb idea?
Here is a photo of what i was talking about. See how the firewall is acut to where fresh air can feed the air filter via ducting...
Here's another example While http://www.ramairbox.com/ has a great product, this is nothing you couldn't fab up yourself if you really wanted it. |

Re: another dumb idea?
Hey, I wonder just how much air one of those things would deliver in our trucks.

Re: another dumb idea?
Yep, you'll get nothing much from the fenders. The base of the windshield is a great place to get air from.
Those two pics are a great idea...

Re: another dumb idea?
with the barn door aerodynamics of our trucks, there would be a LOT of air to be had. The more aerodynamic a vehicle is, the less pressure there would be there. That is a high pressure area once the truck is at speed.

Re: another dumb idea?
If this is a daily driver, you'll want to make the openings up high in the cowl area to avoid water draining into the air filter... bad things would happen then... but otherwise, it's a fine idea.
In all reality, these trucks have enough frontal area with such a tall grill, that you could do something simple like this; And get great results. |

Re: another dumb idea?
Sounds like a good item to sell on the board if you have access to a vacuum forming machine. That would be a nice upgrade, especially for us in the hot zone. Anything to get cooler air in the intake is a good thing.
