Thumbs up Re: Little Brothers 74 Build Up!

Nice project there but i'm confused on why you did that frame repair it looked like it was fine to me. Was it bent or cracking or something?

Just one sugestion i'd strip that TPI back to bare aluminum and clear it theres just too much black in that Eng. compartment.

No it wasn't bent or cracking it was just a bit hideous. i want a person that knows absolutely nothing about cars or trucks to be able to look at these pics and not be grossed out by the snot welds the previous owner put on the frame. I'm trying to make it look like night when you open the hood that's why so much black.

Re: Little Brothers 74 Build Up!

One suggestion for future frame repairs, make the cut about half way down the frame rail on the front, then go back 5" and cut half way up from the bottom, then cut straight down the center from the front cut to the rear cut, then grind the edges down a bit to make a bevelled edge.

Then when you weld, you'll have a far stronger joint than if you weld straight down the frame like you did. The reason has to do with the way steel becomes brittle when you heat it way up like that, thereby hardening it. By welding it across the center of the rail like like I suggest, it has a greater area to dissipate heat, so no specific spot gets quite as hot. I'd also have reccommened fish plating the inside of the frame rail to add some more strength, esspecially on the frame rail with the steering box.

Too late now, but keep a close eye on that joint and watch for signs of cracking!

Otherwise, lookin' real good!

Tell us a bit more about the engine you've built -- What kind of heads are those? Camshaft specs? Compression ratio? Speed Density or MAF?

Re: Little Brothers 74 Build Up!

thanks russel! I did put a diamond plate behind it and i used the reinforcement from a 3/4 pickup. The motor is a 4 bolt 350 w/ 624 thin casting heads 76cc 194in, 150 exhaust the cam is .480 intake/exhaust 270 adv duration 110 centerline comp cam flattop hypereutectic pistons, scat crank pink rods. The tpi is gasket and port matched using a maf system 52mm throttle body. built good enough to just drive and have fun. Im running a th 400 w/ shift kit. The rearend is a stock open end with 3.08 gears. I have two massive turbos that i got off of ebay that i am considering using but i just want it to run for now. also if i go turbo i would like to change over to speed density and use something like megasquirt, because it allows for 20 lbs of boost.

Re: Little Brothers 74 Build Up!

You might have some trouble getting your TPI to run properly at an idle with that camshaft you bought. I've got a very similar cam in my TPI setup, and have an extremely rich idle (aka, blowing black smoke out the tailpipe). I'd suggest going with something that has specs similar to Comp Cam's XE256H Computer Control cam, it'll run very well in a TPI engine without a ton of chip changes. Aim to build have your powerband from idle through 5200 rpm, cause that is about all you'll get out of that intake with the mods you've listed

It looks like you only have one leaf in the pic. Just so you know, my set up uses the top 2 leafs.
Regardless of how it's set up the trucks progress is awesome. Keep the pics coming...

Re: Little Brothers 74 Build Up!

Heck he could adopt us all. I got a swb gmc that has a rusted front passenger side upper shock mount that I'd like suggestions on. I have no experiece in dealing with this sort of problem. No welding skills or equipment. It's now mounted to a large washer that is screwed to the frame using sheet metal screws. I bought the truck this way. Never even thought to look for rust in these areas. Although I've installed a crate engine I'm really unsure I want to keep this vehicle.
